Walkway around house - design question
May 17, 2020 - I am planning a 5' wide walkway around the house (concrete or pavers). I am wondering whether the walkway should be adjoining the house or whether it should be a certain distance away (about 3 feet) separation from the foundation of the house, with mulch in that 3 ft space.

Help with the sad looking walkway to my house!
If it were me I would remove that tree and bush, since it's such a narrow space they make it feel way too crowded. There are lots of shade loving plants so you have a lot of options here. I think trellises along one wall would look amazing, like a living wall vibe. Here's a list of shady vines , you would just want to make sure they stay on a trellis and don't damage your wall. And then on the opposite side you could plant whatever (shade loving plants) that you wanted, such as a smaller type of hosta, or anything that doesn't get too big so it doesn't block your walkway. I would like to add some sort of walkway here. It's about 40 feet. My original idea would be to make a stepping stone pathway, with some thing similar to flgstone that's flush with the grass so I can move over it in between the stones. Or is it too large of an area for a stepping stone walkway? Budget is tight on this and would like to do it myself and keep costs minimal.
