What is a garden nursery bed?

A garden nursery bed is a designated area within a garden or greenhouse where plants are grown for the purpose of propagation, transplantation, and eventual sale or distribution. It is typically a raised bed that's filled with soil and compost and may be covered with a protective covering such as a shade cloth or plastic sheeting to regulate temperature and humidity. Professional growers and home gardeners alike use garden nursery beds to start seeds, cultivate cuttings, and grow young plants until they are ready to be transplanted into larger containers or directly into the garden.

What is the difference between a garden center and a nursery?

The terms garden center and nursery are often used interchangeably, but they do have some differences in their meanings. Here are the main differences between the two:

  • Size: Nurseries are typically larger than garden centers. They often grow their own plants on-site and may have acres of land devoted to plant production, while garden centers are usually smaller and may not have the same amount of space for growing plants.
  • Focus: Nurseries focus primarily on plant production and may offer a wider variety of plant species, including trees and shrubs, as well as flowers and vegetables. Garden centers, on the other hand, may offer a wider variety of gardening supplies, such as tools, pots, fertilizers, and pesticides, in addition to plants.
  • Seasonality: Nurseries tend to be more seasonal than garden centers, with a focus on planting and growing in the spring and summer months. Garden centers may offer gardening supplies and services year-round, including seasonal items such as holiday decorations.
  • Expertise: Nurseries often have staff who are knowledgeable in plant production and can offer advice on growing plants, while garden centers may have staff who are knowledgeable in a wider range of gardening topics, including landscaping and lawn care.

In summary, nurseries tend to focus on plant production and have a wider variety of plant species, while garden centers tend to offer a wider variety of gardening supplies and may be more focused on year-round gardening needs.

r/houseplants on Reddit: Anyone buy Walmart plants and have success?
March 18, 2022 -

Just curious what everyone's experience has been with box store plants. I sometimes see some nifty little plants at Walmart, and some of them even have the same labels as the high end ones at nurseries, which leads me to think they came from the same person originally. I know I can't expect nearly the same level of care from walmart as opposed to nurseries, but if you get a plant that was just brought in then maybe it stands a better chance? Also curious to hear experiences with plants from places like home depot or lowes.

It's really hit or miss with the big box stores. They don't always have "plant people" working the garden center and usually they water too frequently. I avoid certain locations where I've observed things like chronic spider mite outbreaks. Sometimes you find good deals though! The last time I went to a Lowe's I found a BOP with variegation and a heavily discounted neon pothos in a pretty hanging pot. (The manager made up a price because it had no sticker and was the last one left!) As always, inspect the plants carefully and quarantine anything that you bring home. I do this regardless of where I've gotten the plant, because nurseries are not exactly exempt from pest issues or disease.

These are all based off of my local stores, but….. My local lowes has the best plants ever! They take such great care of them, both indoor and outdoor plants. Home Depot does a great job with outdoor plants, not so much with the indoor plants. I just bought two plants from home depot, one died literally two days after I brought it home (it looked great at the store and I did nothing to it, I’m pretty sure it has root rot that I didn’t check for. My peace Lilly is so stuffed into her pot that she goes dry and limp in almost three days, so I’m angry about that because I feel like I shouldn’t have to repot a brand new plant. Lastly, Walmart…. Oh boy they suck. I have never had a plant last or look nice from Walmart. I feel like they just look so sad and don’t grow like my lowes or Home Depot plants. Your local store may have better plant keeping policies but my two local Walmarts do not. Overall, I go with lowes!
