r/Layoffs on Reddit: I made $140k last year and now I work at Walmart for $15.50/hr
October 10, 2023 -

Everyone thinks I'm a loser, even my kids. The look on everyones face when I say I'm working at Walmart....

To me work is work and you do whatever you have to do to support your family. I haven't worked retail since the 90s . Back then I did a lot of shitty jobs like magazine sales, door to door cookware sales, door to door long distance phone service sales, sold knock off perfume in parking lots. I've been working since I was 14 in 1993 with the exception of 9 months laid off in 2013.

I got laid off in March and am on unemployment. I've made massive lifestyle changes and the only debt I have is student loan and mortgage with escrow. I am still $2k short a month with unemployment and it's coming out of my very limited savings. I am working part time as to still get my unemployment and have time to look for a job. I will make an extra $322/week working at Walmart. After taxes that will almost cover food for the month and will lower what I'm taking from savings.

I've been a single parent for over 20 years. I have 2 kids at home that I'm fully supporting. I can't just sit here applying for jobs with no one calling me and just hope, I'd rather just figure shit out in the mean time n do what I gotta do. Ive already been through my network, nothing. I'm tapping into other people's networks, still nothing.

I have a MBA and 24 years in my field. Ironically I just finished my first 2 days at Walmart and I got 2 interview requests (after deleting 14 years of experience fr9m ny resume). I'm super happy about it. I've applied to 200 jobs since January (got WARN notice) and i had 1 legit interview.

Don't be too good to hustle n do what you have to do, whatever that may be. Yes all the negativity made me cry and made me want to just blow off my first day but I put my big girl panties on, said fuck the haters and went to work.

I have to give my one friend/former coworker props because her immediate reaction was " I'm so proud of you!" I used to be her manager. She is the only person in my life that didn't make me feel like a POS. I'm not ashamed I'm working at Walmart so I'm going to keep telling people.

That is all.

ETA I'm a woman, mom

August 7, 2014 - Okay I haven’t been working at Walmart for long but as I woke up this morning to check my shift time it was swiped as nothing was there and I wasn’t aware I been terminated for calling off due to family emergency with my daughter and other things but when I read policy they said they didn’t care about excuse so I came up to the place where I work to talk with hr they were compassionate enough to listen to my issues and told me to bring back the excuses for the drs and he would talk to his boss about it but my thing is even if family emergency I’m still terminated?

r/walmart on Reddit: 40,000 home office associates laid off yesterday
July 31, 2023 -

I have been working with the remodel team for almost two years now, about 5 out of my 35 coworkers have been working for remodel for almost 10 years. We were all called yesterday by different directors (that we’ve never spoken to before) telling us that we were all being laid off effective immediately, even for the associates who were in the middle of a remodel project. We were also told that it was a “hard decision” that was made that same morning at 8:30am. They then told us we’d be receiving packets in the mail the following day (today - 02/28). We thought maybe it was our team being laid off but nope, the entire project team has been disbanded and the position has been erased entirely. They are now hiring part time store associates to complete remodels with a $6 pay cut, while I was making $20/hour with gas mileage reimbursement. Upon parting ways, they’ve given us severance pay for 3 months until we find a new job. After May 30th, we will not be receiving anymore help. I’m incredibly frustrated, anxious, and annoyed. I’m not surprised though. The past year has been rough in this position, a lot of weird changes and we were all kind anticipating something to happen to our position. We definitely didn’t expect to be told to not come back to work in the middle of a project though. Though the severance package they’re leaving us with is a lot better than most, I still can’t help but feel incredibly defeated at this point.

ETA: they’re not actually paying us what they said they were going to for the next 90 days. It’s an average total of what our individual paychecks look like, they’re not counting NPTO or PTO, only working hours.

ETA: the 40,000 came directly from my boss and I didn’t care to check the validity of that due to taking his word and being wrapped up in my own feelings. The number is closer to ~1,500, sorry about the misleading title!

r/developersIndia on Reddit: 2 YOE, laid off from Walmart last week, no idea what to do
December 21, 2024 -

Got placed into a low pay MNC, worked my a*s off to get a SDE job at Walmart, and now randomly got fired in mass layoff with less that a year spent here.

At this experience level, and with one switch already, I don't know if I have any good chance of landing a job with pay similar to Walmart's.

Moreover I don't know what my course of action should be. I have professional experience with Python, K8s etc (tho, on a personal scale ik MERN, CPP, and a little of Go too). But idk how to find a similar job in such a less time...

if you have ever faced such a situation, or have any advice for me.. please help...

If anyone's team is hiring for a SDE with backend and infra experience with 2 YOE, please let me know.

November 3, 2023 -

For those of you affected by the recent layoffs (Dallas, Atlanta, etc) how are you guys doing? Ever since the layoffs, our office (Dallas) has been pretty much dead.

How many of you are taking the severance or relocating?

Speaking with several people, it seems about 60% of you are taking the severance. I've decided to take the pay raise and relocate to Sunnyvale. I know the cost of living is significantly higher but thankfully my wife's mom has property there where we'll live rent free and be able to just save for about 2 years then leave. I know most people were only offered Bentonville or Severance which really sucks.

r/50501 on Reddit: Hiring Freeze at Walmart
1 month ago -

Wal-Mart is no longer hiring and is currently in the midst of a 3 year hiring freeze as they integrate A.I into their stores, this in turn will cause nation wide layoffs. You may not work at Wal-Mart, you may not even shop at Wal-Mart (though that's would be difficult to do in this city), but countless lives of employees and their families will be out of money, food, and housing. My call to the people of Great Falls is to stop shopping at Walmart and Sam's Club avoid it whenever possible. Your dollar is your vote in the fight for the livelihood of your community. We have very few neighborhood grocers but shop with them whenever possible. You may not feel like you can make a change, but your dollar can.

August 21, 2025 - The VP and the Caspex is not loosing anything. Ultimately, we the contractors with dreams, commitments got affected who got nothing but regular pay and not aware of what was going on. Walmart should not blacklist us at any case, as if we bribed the VP.

r/cscareerquestions on Reddit: Walmart Confirms Firing 1200 Contractors and VP for Taking Daily Kickbacks
August 28, 2025 -

There was a story going around last week that came from Blind about a VP that got fired and that 1200 contractors were let go. A lot of people think it was a rumour. However, it seems like that did indeed happen based on a tweet from a Walmart exec. Although he seemed to minimize the situation: Dan Bartlett on X: "To set the record straight, earlier this month, following an investigation, Walmart terminated one vendor and a small number of U.S.-based associates. This investigation had nothing to do with H-1B visas and everything to do with acting with Integrity, a core Walmart value." / X

Recruiters all over LinkedIn have been reaching out to people saying that 1200 contractors were let go, and they need to fill a ton of positions by next Friday

The leadership making decisions about AI has no clue and doesn't care about workers. The goal is rush out AI sloppily and layoff people and call it a win while existing employees do multiple jobs.
