I know it's not the most glamorous thing, but has anyone had a job at one of these locations? I'm assuming it's a contracted job that you supply your own equipment/backdrops etc. If not, are you an employee of Walmart making an hourly wage? Do you report to the store manager? Just interested to know how the day-to-day works inside of a big box retail store.

I had an interview for a khol's studio photog job. It was an hourly position (i assume minimum or close to it), but they provided equipment and everything. Not sure how editing or anything like that was done, but they were just as concerned about being able to sell as they were about being able to take pictures.

I looked into that at my local Walmart (in Canada - not sure if that makes a difference) when I got laid off and needed a job. It's like that picture that went around a while ago of the rig for shooting kids' soccer portraits. Old semi-pro crop sensor camera, one pre-set lighting setup, and a laminated sheet that tells you the settings you have to use. The "on-location" photography services they offer are basically them contracting jobs out to local photographers. They want you to have your own gear, and (I could definitely be wrong here) I believe you have to edit the photos a specific way. You're making less than if you were to do it on your own, and, especially for the on-location deals, you're basically paying Walmart to be a middle man, and to remove some or all of your creative control. The only way you could spice it up is to take the required shots, then get in and put your spin on some extra shots if you have time. But, if my years in retail have taught me anything, it's that no one will care, it won't help you advance, and they may get mad at you for not following the rules. I don't know how easy it would be to use that to break into the photography scene. There are people who put in effort and pay extra for good photographers, and there are people who will hire any mom-photographer off Facebook; I think the people who go to Walmart for photography are in the second group, if not worse. I don't think they have high expectations, and I think it'll be tough to get portfolio photos out of the situation. Take this all with a grain of salt, because I didn't actually work there (I just met with the manager a few times about potentially working there), and I'm from a smaller town of about 100 000. Your city could have a different demographic, and YMMV. IMHO, if you need a job, take it, but treat it like any other minimum wage retail job. It almost definitely won't jumpstart a career in photography, especially in 2016. FWIW, I saw a posting for the photography studio at a later date, and it said photography experience was preferred, but not required. That about sums up the job from what I can tell.
