I keep all my credit scores frozen. I unfroze my Transunion just to check the pre qualification for the Walmart card and I was pre approved. Before actually hitting apply I went back and froze my Transunion and then hit the button to apply. Low and behold I was approved! Just wanted to share this with anyone looking to get the card but don’t want to take a hit to your credit.
Update: Just to clarify in case my wording wasn’t clear it didn’t hit my credit. I got an email from Credit Karma stating a credit inquiry was blocked.

After some bad personal choices my credit was in "poor" range for a few years. 2 cards were closed (cap one and bank of america). After some time paying a car loan I guess I managed to bring score back up and I was blessed and offered a second chance by cap one(Capital One Platinum) and Discover (Secured IT) card in May/June 2022 (thanks in part to you guys! =) ).
FYI my Discover card has since been upgraded to a non secured card and my credit has increased to 600-700 range.
So, I recently came across an ad for a Walmart Store Card via Capital One and used their pre approval form to see if I qualify. Apparently I do and am considering getting it. However I am wondering whether it's worth it or if I should instead just continue working on raising limits for current cards, especially since I already have another Capital One card? I am also wondering if this will somehow limit my ability to raise my limits on my current card? In addition, I was told capital one cards starting in '5178' cards are sub prime, which is what I have..
So I guess I am wondering if the Walmart card would be an "upgrade" to my current Capital One Platinum, and a non sub prime sort of card, and if I should see this as an opportunity? Or wondering also if it is in a "higher tier"? Or do store cards work differently even though branded by Capital One thus will be seen as an entirely separate card despite already having Capital One Platinum? My main goal is to get in 700-800 range and have a decent limit available to me, for emergencies etc; And have a card that will be a good stepping stone for the future. Again, not sure if it's accurate, but my Capital One Platinum is a '5178' card and I feel like I need to counteract it by getting a better card?
In addition, despite pre-approval, I am concerned about potential rejection, which I assume would lower my score from credit inquiry, undoing a lot of my hard work!
Thank you all
I applied and got approved for the Walmart credit card over 2 months ago. When I use the pre-approval tool for the VX, the only reason I’m not getting pre-approved is because of a recent application with Capitol One.
I’ve seen data points of people saying that the Walmart credit card isn’t affected by the 6-month rule. Has anyone else had the same or different experience?
Wondering if I will have to wait 6 months to be able to apply for the VX.
So the other day I (19, f/t student working summer jobs) was at Walmart with my mother and as we were using the self checkout, an employee came up to us to try and make a sale by getting us to sign up for a new Walmart mastercard. My mom already has one, so it was mostly aimed at me. We considered it since it came with a small incentive of $10 off our purchase the same day, but since there's no annual fee, and I currently only have a Visa, my mom thought it couldn't hurt and I might as well also get a mastercard since I don't really use CC's for much other than small purchases which I pay back quickly, to build my credit.
As a student I wanted to be sure and check that I'd be eligible (just have to be over 18 apparently) and as a student, it's still okay to apply, which the employee reassured me would be fine. So we go ahead and she starts the process, filling in information including my own annual income (which they put as 0 since I'm a full time student), the household income, etc.
Lo and behold, the application goes through.. only to not have been instantly approved. Apparently, the employee says after the fact, you have to be instantly approved in order to get the free $10. They told us that we could call in and check the status/get approved in the next two days while the application is still open in that duration of time, but I didn't end up doing so.
My question now is, since this is technically a credit card application, should I refrain from applying to any more credit cards in the near future? Does my credit score also take a hit from applying and not being instantly approved? It feels a little like overkill since I wasn't exactly denied but I wanted to make sure.
Would my score also go down because I didn't follow up and call the centre? Realistically I don't believe I'll be applying to any new credit cards in the near future but I just want to cover all my bases and learn more. Thanks so much if you've read this far!
TLDR; applied for Walmart mastercard, not instantly approved, what happens (if anything) now?
ETA: after the two days the application is automatically closed ie. I didn't pursue it by calling in, so does it count as being declined as well?
