Be wary of washable rugs. They are often paper thin and cheaply made. Generally, most people don’t own a washing machine big enough to even fit their washable area rug. Depending on what size you want, actually washing your washable rug may not be feasible. Answer from Stunning-Librarian90 on reddit.com

I’ve newly discovered the world of washable rugs only to not find any with good recommendations? I’m not looking for anything fancy, just something that can be thrown in the washing machine and won’t get sucked up by my vacuum. I’d be getting a 5x7 or even 5x6 if I can find it. I’ve seen Ruggable and Tumble Rugs but seem to only be seeing the bad reviews. I see that Amazon has some but again, more bad reviews than good. So I’m hopeful that Reddit can help me narrow down at least where I should buy one.

I feel like every few years my area rugs are so matted and look super run down. I've had them professionally cleaned and they still don't look great. I also had an old cat for years who had lots of accidents which didn't help.

I've looked into ruggable but saw mixed results. Anyone super happy with their area rugs that lasts more than 2-3 years? What brand do you have? Ideally looking for something easy to clean or I can put in the washing machine.

I have a large rug in my family room that I am very close to ditching out of disgust between my toddler getting sick all over it and my cat dragging his dingleberry butt across it both within the space of a week. I cleaned it of course with a carpet/upholstery spot cleaner but idk. Both those things are pretty gross. I'd leave the floor bare but it's a large room and the coldest in the house and could use something. I see these washable rugs everywhere that don't require the pads like the brand name ones do, but it seems like it would be difficult to actually wash these in practice especially larger sizes (8x10 or 9x12 ft). I have a large top loader with a removable agitator that can handle large comforters (full/queen) and king size quilts. But I'd be worried about it handling something that would be potentially quite heavy when wet. Anyone have any experience with these rugs and actually washing them?

EDIT: I really appreciate the comments so far - some good recommendations and food for thought. I might end up getting two smaller washable ones (5x7's maybe) plus or minus a wet/dry vac, we'll see!

I swore I’d never buy another “cute but doomed” rug after the last one met its end via a juice box ambush. But here we are again. I need something that won’t make me cry when my kid decides applesauce is finger paint or when the dog does, well, dog things.

So, washable rugs, are they worth it? What brands are you actually liking right now? I keep hearing about Ruggable but I feel like there have to be other options out there. It also needs to be able to fit in my washing machine, or I'm hoping, but it's for a smallish area (5 x 7).

I’m interested in buying a large area rug and a couple of runners. However, I have 2 dogs and 2 small children. We live in an area where the dirt is easily tracked inside.

The sound of a washable rug is great; but I keep thinking 1) it’s gonna be so thin, what’s the point? 2) my vacuum is going to eat up the rug 3) large area rug probably won’t fit in my washing machine (though I do have a high capacity machine)?

For those of you who have washable rugs, can I please have honest feedback on cleaning them? As I said, I’m worried my vacuum will eat it up making it impossible to get the dirt out. Thanks in advance!

Hey,

I would love to get this Ruggable rug (in the Pantone colour of the year, a light peach). I would get the version for a high traffic area but I was wondering how washable these things actually were. I have an infant and the rug would be near the entrance to the backyard. So lots of potential for grime.

I was just wondering about your experiences. Are they actually really readily washable or should I give up on my pipe dream?

EDIT: You guys are amazing! Thank you so much for your thoughts on the rug and recommendations

r/HomeDecorating on Reddit: Anyone purchased a washable rug from Wayfair or Rugs USA?
June 3, 2023 -

I was originally interested in a ruggable but I've seen a lot of reviews that they curl and the velcro pads can hold onto dirt/be hard to clean. I was looking into Tumble rugs until i realized they don't ship to Canada. Wayfair and Rugs USA are another option for machine washable rugs. Does anyone have a rug from either company and how does it hold up? Is curling an issue, and do you have any solutions if so? I don't want a tripping hazard. We're currently renting and the floors are so ugly they're driving me crazy lol. We also have pets and a baby so the idea of tossing it in a machine to wash when it really needs a good clean appeals to me.

How does everyone keep their area rugs clean? We have a crawling baby and I feel the floor is the best place for her but with a dog in the house as well, I can’t keep the floors as clean as I prefer (kind of a germaphobe). I’ve heard ruggable is garbage but I like the idea of it. Do you rent a carpet cleaner machine and do it yourself? Hire someone? Is there something out there similar to ruggable that’s better? Doesn’t help that our area rug is like shag carpet so even if I did rent a machine to clean it myself I’m not sure how clean it would get.

For what it’s worth, I have a Ruggable in my sons playroom and I love it. It can be a little tricky to roll out since the pad and the rug are separate pieces but I find the quality of the rug to be great for a playroom.

You can buy a carpet cleaner and they will last for years and do a good job on a low pile wool rug. I have one of the hoover ones, not the cheapest one, but the $269 one and I think I have had it for 5 year +. https://hoover.com/collections/carpet-cleaners I like wool rugs because as a natural fiber has a bit of an oil/smooth texture to it and it sheds dirt better when you vacuum. Usually low pile wool rugs are 90% wool and 10% nylon. They aren't the softest, but they stay amazingly clean even with pets. I usually steam clean them twice a year, using a cleaner that is safe for wool and coolish water. I vacuum weekly and they will shed at first. But overall they last for years. Always use a rug pad, that will extend the life of your rugs. I usually get 15+ years from my wool rugs, by that time you are tired of looking at them and could use a change. This is one of the wool rugs that I have in my living room. It is hand knotted, but even machine knotted ones are fine as well. https://www.solorugs.com/collections/blue/products/simi-handmade-area-rug I have this one under my dining table. It is a machine woven wool one. It looks a lot busier in the pictures, but that is great for hiding a spill until you can get carpet cleaner out. https://www.nourison.com/timeless-tml18-navy Whatever you do, don't buy a rug with canvas backing on it. That is glued on an you can't shampoo that type. For washable rugs I have some of these in the indoor/outdoor PET style. https://annieselke.com/c/rugs Couple points on these, they are not soft to sit on. They are washable, but you need a large machine at the laundry mat. The edges tend to curl, so you have to roll them under for a while and store them then bring them out and they will stay pretty flat. I would not buy the cotton ones, they shrink. Any of the ones with bright white will show dirt, so maybe order the design with a cream or beige. I have a couple of 3 x 5 and runners for my doors/hallways. Also you will need a rug pad for these.

Hi all! Looking for feedback on Revival washable rugs if anyone has to share?! I have two ruggables, and really no complaints (ok fine, the color fading isn’t ideal), but i’m looking for a softer option for my bedroom. Revival caught my attention and their reviews seem great, but I know better than to not ask reddit. Let me know!!

Currently have Ruggables and my new Miele HX2 will not function on them (the material is too thin, vacuum sucks up the rug and shuts it down).

I'm looking to replace the Ruggable with something that can be vacuumed, and also doesn't suck (velcro pad is a nightmare to deal with).

I've seen RugUSA Cloud rugs that I think *might* work, but wanted to see if anyone have experience prior to me making a purchase!

Potty training toddler.

We got a large wool rug for a steal at Home Goods but now after several years, it feels gross. We live in a rural area so it’s not easy to take it somewhere to clean. We wanted a rug in the living room since that’s where our son plays most of the time, and when he was crawling, we wanted something softer than hardwood.

We’ve spot cleaned it but it’s hard to clean.

Now I’m really intrigued by washable rugs (tumble, Ruggable). Has anyone had these? What’s your review?

Or maybe I’ll just get rid of rugs all together. I got rid of the rug in his room because I was tired of picking cheerios out of it and it was so much easier to sweep the hardwood! 😂
