FBI raids home of Washington Post reporter in ‘highly unusual and aggressive’ move | US news | The Guardian
18 hours ago - “It is intended to intimidate sources and chill journalists’ ability to gather news and hold the government accountable. Such behavior is more commonly associated with authoritarian police states than democratic societies that recognize journalism’s essential role in informing the public.” · The Post has had a rocky relationship with the Trump administration in recent months, despite its billionaire owner, Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder, attempting to curry favor by blocking it from endorsing Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, in the 2024 presidential election.

Everyone (we know of) who left WaPo this month
Then there are the legions of readers who are leaving. My WaPo subscription runs until April, after which I will not renew. The only thing I still read there is Carolyn Hax's advice column, and since November the comments section on that has been full of subscribers saying they're leaving because of the non-endorsement decision. Washington Post issues two corrections to Taylor Lorenz article that had already been stealth-edited
I like Lorenz's reporting, though I'll admit her Twitter persona doesn't always do her favors. That said, these are really pretty minor errors — saying you contacted someone for comment who is maybe the 5th or 6th biggest person in the piece, with nothing particularly controversial said about them. It's not good to do, but it seems like the kind of thing that could easily be attributed to carelessness. People were making it out like she lied about this big thing, which isn't the case. We’re Washington Post journalists who spent months reporting on one of the biggest leaks of government secrets in U.S. history and Jack Teixeira’s possible motivations. Ask us anything.
I remember reading about the leaks related to War Thunder, where gamers with security clearances wanted to win arguments about the capabilities of tanks and other military hardware. In your reporting you say Texeira's motive appeared to be just ... clout? Any more details about motivation, or the reception by the communities he was trying to impress? It baffles me that someone would risk their freedom just to get some strangers online to think they are cool. More on reddit.com

A memo she issued said members of the press are “presumptively entitled to advance notice of such investigative activities,” and subpoenas are to be “narrowly drawn.” Warrants must also include “protocols designed to limit the scope of intrusion into potentially protected materials or newsgathering activities,” the memo states. r/Journalism on Reddit: Everyone (we know of) who left WaPo this month
January 4, 2025 -

Doing some end-of-the-year email cleaning, and thought I'd share the farewell messages we've gotten through HR. Written on a burner account, of course. Here's who leaving and where they're going

Jan 4. Op/ed cartoonist Ann Talnaes.

Jan 2. White House reporter Tyler Pager / New York Times
Dec 31. Political reporter Michael Scherer / The Atlantic
Dec 31. Political reporter Ashley Parker / The Atlantic
Dec 20. Health researcher McKenzie Beard / New York Post
Dec 17. Megan Griffith-Greene, service journalism / Poynter Institute
Dec 9. Managing editor Matea Gold / NYT
Dec 4. Harry Stevens, climate / NYT
Nov. Hannah Allam, national security / Propublica

There are a few more, but they weren't publicly announced, so I won't put them here. But they include a female environmentalist, female researchers who were not renewed and a group of project managers who were laid off.

There is a trend for departures: critical politics reporters; journalists who cover climate, environment, public service; women.

Edit: Adds more names thanks to the people commenting here.

Press freedom advocates worry that raid on Washington Post journalist's home will chill reporting
15 hours ago - Jameel Jaffer, executive director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, has been working on press freedom issues for a decade and said a government raid on a journalist’s home is so unusual he couldn’t remember the last time it happened. He said it can’t help but have a chilling effect on journalism. “I strongly suspect that the search is meant to deter not just that reporter but other reporters from pursuing stories that are reliant on government whistleblowers,” Jaffer said. “And it’s also meant to deter whistleblowers.” · In a first-person piece published by the Post on Christmas Eve, Natanson wrote about how she was inundated with tips when she posted her contact information last February on a forum where government employees were discussing the impact of Trump administration changes to the federal workforce.
