The wiki is a bit weird, you need both a crystal ball and a source of water (sink, or water placed down works as well maybe) The crystal ball part makes crafting it locked behind hardmode The only way to get them in pre-hardmode is to grab some from the dungeon.

I used chaos candle today, but it didn't work.

It's not a bug, both the Chaos Candle and Zerg Potion have been massively nerfed. Zerg Potion: Spawn rate decreased from 30x to 1.5x Max spawns remain the same (5x) Chaos Candle: Spawn rate decreased from 15x to 1.4x Max spawns decreased from 2.5x to 2x This was based on the Discord changelogs, Calamity wiki and my own testing. In addition, they both take Cores of Chaos, making them go from early hardmode to post-Plantera. If you want a more potent spawn rate boost, I recommend Reduced Grinding for the War Potion and Chaos Potion which boost the spawn rates massively (War is like a better Zerg and Chaos pretty much maxes out the spawns to as high as they will go). Also, I've heard there's a spawn rate boosting potion/buff in Luiafk but I haven't used it so idk. Alternatively you can manually turn the spawn rates up/down with Cheat Sheet (or you can install the previous version of Calamity if you prefer).

i saw someone say it was nerfed but i've been trying to use it since the update and i'm not seeing any spawnrate increase at all. either they nerfed it to be worse than the water candle for some reason or it's currently bugged.

February 16, 2026 - Part of the curse of the Dungeon, same curse the Old Man has. It has coalesced around the candle and so is basically moving the curse of the Dungeon wherever you take it.

So if you used Gold try Platinum. Might have to do some fishing for crates but you don't need much to at least test if the other type will work. ... Thanks. I'll try that. If I have to, can I disable the mods, pop in to an old world, make my candles, then reenable the mods and and return to my current world without messing anything up?

Can I force additional Enemy Spawns during a Blood Moon Event if I place a Water Candle near my spawn which contains NPCs?
I've heard that NPCs lower enemy spawn rates, but I'm not sure if (a) that reduced spawn rate applies during Blood Moon, and (b) do Water Candles negate that reduced spawn rate by NPC presence?

From my understanding (could be wrong) once you hit a certain number of NPC's monsters don't spawn. This is negated by the Blood Moon. The water candle increases spawn rate. Witb NPC's blocking monsters only critter spawns are affected, so you get more rabbits/squirrels/bugs, not sure on Blood Moon + water candle though.

Ok so NPC's normallly turn a portion of the spawn into critters. So putting 4 on the screen converts the entire spawn to critters. Battle Potion and water candles increases the spawn cap and rates so you get even more critters. If you add 80 jungle brick to flip the biome spawn rate, but use normal purity spawn surfaces or better yet hallow spawn surfaces you get a bigger cap and rate still. Then blood moon comes along and ignores the Critter conversion, ups the spawn rate again, increases the cap, and ignores the can't spawn in front of Player placed walls rule.
