You need to include reactor-netty on the classpath. As by default that is the HTTP client used by WebClient.
pom.xml:
<dependency>
<groupId>io.projectreactor.netty</groupId>
<artifactId>reactor-netty</artifactId>
</dependency>

No worry option would be adding
<dependency>
<groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
<artifactId>spring-boot-starter-webflux</artifactId>
</dependency>

July 23, 2025 - It is also the replacement for the classic RestTemplate. It is a part of spring-webflux library and also offers support for both synchronous and asynchronous operations. The DefaultWebClient class implements this WebClient interface. For Maven: Add this dependency to the pom.xml file.

java-httpclient-webclient-spring-boot-starter: Powering Spring's WebClient with Java 11's HttpClient - Craig Andrews
October 13, 2020 - java-httpclient-webclient-spring-boot-starter is a library that I created to provide a quick and easy way to use Java 11’s HttpClient as Spring’s WebClient‘s client HTTP connector. If you’re using Spring Boot 2.3 or later, it’s worth checking out. The library is in Maven Central so it’s easy to incorporate into any new or existing proejct regardless of your choice to use Gradle, Maven, or another dependency management / build system.

Spring Web MVC + WebClient: How they work Together – Stefan Kreidel
Combining Spring Web MVC and WebClient on a code level is pretty straight forward to get started, although, it is admittedly not intuitive at first: // build.gradle.kts plugins { java id("org.springframework.boot") version "3.0.5" id("io.spring.dependency-management") version "1.1.0" } repositories { mavenCentral() } dependencies { implementation("org.springframework.boot:spring-boot-starter-web") implementation("org.springframework.boot:spring-boot-starter-webflux") }
