LPT: When you sign up for anything online, put the websites name as your middle name. That way when you receive spam/advert emails, you will know who sold your info.
My job involves buying data. All you have to do is land on our website and I can buy your name, email address, mailing address, facebook info, twitter info, if you're married, if you have kids, if you own a home, your approx net worth, your education level, etc. It's done all the time and it's cheap to buy. Totally legit and legal. Your information is already out there.
Edit: To everyone who is asking how this is possible. I asked the same thing in a meeting and the company that sells this data said,"If you ever signed up for a free Netflix account you agreed to all this wether you know it or not."

More on reddit.comSo you buy a domain name, then what?
Hi,
I apologize if some of this is already familiar to you, but this is how I explain hosting to my web design clients when they are making a purchasing decision.
The domain name is just that, a name. You purchase this name from a database and are essentially renting it for a set period of time, usually a year. It can be a .com, .net, or unique ones like .photography.
Personally I recommend that my clients purchase all similar domains to the one they want to use for their business, as it is such a small fee for the provided peace of mind.
Hosting is where your website lives and is where the files are stored that the browser then reads. You also rent this space from a hosting provider. There is a wide range of hosting plans and providers. I recommend doing research into what it is you need from a hosting plan before purchasing. Does it need to be secure? How often will you update or add content? Will visitors be able to interact with your site to add content of their own, or is it static? These are the type of questions to ask.
Once you have picked a hosting provider, upload your files using some sort of file manager. Many hosting providers will let you upload from your computer by dragging or selecting. Most, it not all, allow for an FTP connection.
I would highly recommend keeping a copy of your website files on your personal computer or storage device.
Next, point your domain name to your files with your hosting provider. Specific instructions for how to do this will be given to you by the hosting company.
There is a lot more that I left out but that should get you started. Let me know if you would like recommendations for domain purchasing or hosting providers.
