Sofa sleeper couches in general are not very comfortable, either for sleeping or in the couch position itself. In all honesty, if this is going to be your main couch in your living room and it's a room you'll be spending a lot of time in as a family, you're probably much better off getting a couch that is overall a better fit for your needs, especially if you'll be lounging on it every day for the next several years, and getting a queen sized Aerobed for guests. Sleeper sofas suck and are terribly uncomfortable, you get stuck with a bar right across your back and any mattress that is designed to fold up will always be terrible. When I've been stuck with a sleeper sofa, I always pull the mattress off and lay it directly on the floor to sleep. That sucks too, but not as much as having a bar in your back. In the long run, guests will be much more comfortable with an inflatable mattress and nice bedding that actually fits the mattress, and so will you.

American Leather makes some of the best quality/comfiest sleeper sofas in the US in my opinion. A few of their designs are on the cleaner/modern side too. Not 100%, but I'm pretty positive some of West Elm/Pottery Barn/etc. sleeper sofas are rebranded & actually made by the American Leather co. (the Henry was at least in the past). Consider checking out American Leather directly & see if they have a retailer around you. I'm always surprised by who supplies them - high-end furniture shops to kitchen supply stores: https://retailers.americanleather.com/ As for quality of West Elm in general, definitely hit or miss - but in comparison to what at that price point??? Not all is bad. Research & be selective with your purchases (as you are doing). I will say, we've had the 92" Leather Dekalb for a year with VERY frequent use (2 working from home adult, couch-potatoes) & it has held up extremely well - but that is only a year's use. Friends & clients that went with Article, for comparison, have leather seats/sofas sagging heavily and/or already returned (again, not all Article furniture is bad - I own Article furniture that I would recommend).
