This is pretty much par for course. HSBC also advertises free transfers, you just pay their inflated exchange rates. It's similar to banks don't tell you that exchanging currency costs x amount of money but the fees are all baked into the rate. You already use Wise, it's one of the cheapest ways to send money globally. There's also Remitly and XE.com. More on reddit.com

I used it many times. It works, it works everywhere (except for Iran, Russia and North Korea, obviously), the receiver only needs a valid passport or another ID, but it’s expensive. More on reddit.com

I always encounter two major problems when traveling to Mexico all having to do with money. The first issue is finding an ATM with a good exchange rate and low ATM fee. My second issue is that I always get issued large bills from an ATM which makes it crazy difficult to get change for small bills. I was able to get around these issues by sending myself money Via Western Union. Western Union had the BEST exchange rate and I was charged no fees for the first two transactions. I was charged around $3 USD for my third transaction which is pretty good. The best thing is that I was able to pick up my money from a partner bank that allowed me to choose the bill denominations which means I didn't have try and get chang anywhere. The only downside is that you cannot pick up money from Western Union partner places like convenience stores, pharmacies and department stores ( that don't have a bank inside) without a local I.D. You can pick up money from any partner bank using a passport of any kind.
Edit* I forgot to mention WU has an app so no need to go to an actual location to send yourself money. Just set up your account before you leave.

I have never understood this concern over the exchange rate. All legitimate exchanges are roughly the same. OK, the airports might be bad. But mostly, unless you’re exchanging $1000’s, the difference in the rate might result in the loss of a cup of coffee. The time spent looking to save that cup of coffee usually costs the whole damn lunch. It’s just not worth spending time on. Personally, because I travel so much, I have a WISE card and make the exchanges from my hostel in another country even. I have friends who use Revolut, much the same. In the long run, if you’re really just a tourist, you cannot save enough from finding the better exchange rate from the loss you’ll take in time spent even thinking about this.
