Like The Plant List, the WFO Plant List is a working list of all known plant species, but differs in that it is curated by the international taxonomic community. The Plant List has not been updated since 2013.

The standardisation of plant names is a critical step in various fields of biology, including biodiversity, biogeography, and vegetation research. The WorldFlora R package (Kindt 2020) matches lists of plant names using the static copy of the World Flora Online (WFO) taxonomic backbone available here.

December 15, 2021 - A significant development has been the creation of the WFO Plant List (WFOPlantList.org) to replace the long out-dated but frequently used Plant List v.1.1 (plantlist.org). The new WFO Plant List updates the higher classifications to follow the latest Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification (APG IV) and the equivalents in bryophytes, gymnosperms and pteridophytes.

The WFO Plant List API, https://​list​.world​flo​raon​line​.org, provides a machine readable version of the data and powers the version on the WFO website.

List. Note that The Plant List has been static since 2013, but was used as the starting point for the · Taxonomic Backbone of the World Flora Online. Function WFO.one finds one unique matching name for each submitted name.

This data is being updated and The Plant List has now been replaced by the WFO Plant List (2021 onwards), generated as snapshots of the Taxonomic Backbone. Updating of the taxonomic backbone will be a continuous process as we refine our understanding of the relationships among plants.

January 9, 2024 - This has been designed for direct import into a schemaless instance of a SOLR index and is used to drive the WFO Plant List API (https://list.worldfloraonline.org) which in turn drives the WFO Plant List in the portal.
