Formal or Informal Fallacy?

It doesn't matter. You shouldn't waste your time trying to categorize fallacies or give them names or anything like this. Your life will be better if you just ignore all of this stuff. Don't get sucked down the fallacy rabbit hole. There's nothing good down there.

Logic: Formal and Informal Fallacies

Whenever I engage in an internet debate, I always keep a list of logical fallacies handy. Some may call this excessive, but this is because only true redditors understand the raw power of the fallacy.

First I ensure my post is devoid of grammatical mistakes. After all, it's clear that intelligent people don't make grammatical mistakes. I never make grammatical erors, which proves that I must be intelligent.

Next I'll systematically break down their arguments. Obviously, most people find my refutations hard to understand. But this just proves that they are infact simpletons. I always strain to remind people that the burden of proof is on them to disprove all of my exceptionally well argued claims.

After that I'll throw in a few Carl Sagan or Sam Harris quotes - giants and respected authorities in their fields. After all, if these enlightened gentlemen agree with me, I must surely be in the right!

Finally I'll check to see who I'm arguing against. If my opponent is anything but a gnostic atheist, I immediately refuse to respond. Anybody that denies the natural truth of atheism is not worth my time.

TIL the fallacy fallacy is the formal fallacy of analyzing an argument and inferring that, since it contains a fallacy, its conclusion must be false.
I see this often on internet 'discussions'. There is always someone, who likely reads every social econ book that comes out and feels the need to impress its ideas on everyone around them, who shoehorns a fallacy into everything and thus thinks they have nullified the counter argument. 12 hours ago - Informal fallacies, the larger group, may then be subdivided into categories such as improper presumption, faulty generalization, error in assigning causation, and relevance, among others. The use of fallacies is common when the speaker's goal of achieving common agreement is more important to them than utilizing sound reasoning. When fallacies are used, the premise should be recognized as not well-grounded, the conclusion as unproven (but not necessarily false), and the argument as unsound.

A fallacy is a mistake in reasoning. A formal fallacy is a fallacy that can be identified merely by examining the argumentโ€™s form or using a tool like a truth table. An informal fallacy cannot be detected from the argumentโ€™s form. There are no foolproof tools for detecting informal fallacies.

August 5, 2016 - Very often they involve bringing irrelevant information into an argument or they are based on assumptions that, when examined, prove to be incorrect. Formal fallacies are created when the relationship between premises and conclusion does not hold up or when premises are unsound; informal fallacies are more dependent on the misuse of language and of evidence.

Some arguments are faulty, not necessarily because of the truth or falsity of the premises, but because they rely on psychological and emotional ploys. These are bad arguments because people shouldnโ€™t accept your conclusion if you are using scare tactics or distracting and manipulating reasoning. Arguments that have this issue are called fallacies.

A fallacious argument under this interpretation is a kind of invalid or unsound argument. Another way to specify a fallacy is to say that it is a mistake, or error, in reasoning. Such reasoning may at first glance seem reasonable, but, as looks are sometimes deceiving, a more careful examination reveals its fallacious nature.
