r/musicproduction on Reddit: Are there any royalty-free music production apps for android or IOS 15?
June 20, 2023 -

I want to get into music production since I have a lot of lyrics just laying around.

I don't play any insturment so I decided on using an app to compose. I've researched and the best app I found was Garageband, where I can get license of the song I made. But my iPad is kind of old and doesn't support IOS 16.

I've also come across SoundTrap which is completely royalty free and easy to use (for me at least), but I wanna know if there are better alternatives, because for some reason I can't add guitar sounds.

So I want to know if there are any apps with the following features:

  • Works on Android or IOS 16

  • Lets me copyright the songs I make without additional payment

  • Completely free

  • Not very hard to use

I know I'm asking for too much, but I appreciate any help. Thanks for the recommendations in advance. :]

Edit: realised I need something for my MacBook, not tablet as it doesn't have a headphone jack and just one USB C. So I will just use the tablet for playing around with something basic when I need ultra portable. Caustic seems to be the most recommended so far, despite it's age.

I have tried quite a few apps and have been left frustrated. I would like something that ticks these boxes please:

  1. Easy to use - I tried various apps but they are confusing, hence me asking this rather than just trying more. I have tried some tutorials and wasted a lot of time only to discover the app is not for me e.g. very limited free version, very few instruments, being loop based instead of letting me make my own music...

  2. Free. At least has a good free level so I can try it for a while and isn't too expensive if one day I will need to pay. I don't want to commit to a year after 5 minutes. Reasonable price would be a couple of dollars per month, not $5+ per month. Free would be best to get me into making music.

  3. Not based on pre-made loops. Many apps I have tried seem to be based on loops, so they are just remixing other people's music. I want to create my own music from scratch. Using loops feels like cheating.

  4. Contains plenty of instruments. Some apps I have tried don't even have more than one drum kit. I would like a decent selection of instruments to choose from. Happy to upgrade in future, but for now I need a decent amount to get started e.g. 5 drum kits with at least 5 different kicks and snares to choose from.

  5. Can be played on screen, or hooked up to a midi controller.

  6. Doesn't make me sign up to start. I am happy to sign up when I decide I will use the app, but I am not giving my email away to random apps that I haven't used yet. This one isn't a deal breaker if the recommendation is strong.

Is there anything that ticks all of the above? There are so many apps now that there must be one or two.

Also, is there a more suitable sub Reddit to ask questions like this? Thanks.

r/musicproduction on Reddit: Simple music making apps?

Does anybody know of any very simple music making apps? What I’m looking for is something that I can record sounds with my phone and make a loop out of them, eventually putting them together. I’m not experienced in music making but I am interested in trying some things out and experimenting a little. Like i said, the simpler the better. Thank you!
