December 2, 2025How do you see Thailand, if your main source are Thai BLs?
My idea of Thailand was half shaped by BL and half by working in a Thai restaurant as a teenager. I am flying home from Bangkok tomorrow. Here’s what I thought, why I thought it and if it’s true. Thai people are very polite and kind - true when I was a teenager, true in most BL and true in real life. The weather is hot but manageable (due to BL… I have a whole post about this) - absolutely not in Bangkok. It’s hot but the humidity and the UV rating will get you. Moonlight Chicken is the only show keeping it real haha. Most people in Thailand will mostly have darker skin tones (from my experience as a teenager) - true. BL has a habit of casting people who are lighter skin and I wish more actors like Net and Apo would be cast because there needs to be more actors that look like the public who are trying to relate with them. Bangkok is cool and kind of a glamorous place where the buildings are modern, it’s easy to drive around and everyone wears gorgeous clothes (BL to blame for this one) - not true. Some buildings are flashy but in reality it’s not like that for a lot of the city. There would be a lot of BL actor product advertisement (BL) - I’ve only seen Zee and Nunew on something in a 7Eleven. That said I haven’t looked super hard. I have worked with Thai people, taken Asian Culture Business classes for university and watched BL for over a year. Academic theory and media does not give you the accurate understanding being there in person does. All in all though I think the things that didn’t match the image in my head aren’t super important things at the end of the day. More on reddit.com

for your friends, it really depends on someone's preference. as for me, i am not really analytical when it comes to the technical aspects of the show. as long as it entertains me, it's already good for me. when you come to think of it, your friends are actually right. the show doesnt really follow a plot. in anime terms, it feels like each episodes are just OVA. nonetheless, i am a huge fan of PondPhuwin pairing and I'm following the show every week. Very little relevance tbh. Every once in a while, a series will break through and become mainstream (like 2gether or ITSAY), but that's a one in a million chance. BL has the same reputation in Thailand as RomComs or teen shows do in the West - mindless entertainment without artistic merit. Since BL also comes with the fandom angle, it's seen as a vehicle for creating a fanbase. That's why actors who hit major popularity with BL rarely go back to it (PPKrit, BrightWin). I have a question because of conversation with my friends, I (m) and my two other friends ( both female) watch BL's together, so we are watching We Are and I am loving it , I'm a sucker for friends and love stories lol. They two of them are liking the series because it has cute moments, however they are saying that nothing is really happening. They both like the steamy side of dramas and also the drama side. They want some sexy scenes or crazy dramatic twist or something to happen and all they see is a friend group finding love , doing summer camps and having fun. So I was curious to see what other people think and feel on this one. Is this just fun and you are enjoying it , or do you wish it had more things going on?

I like it. But I also think it’s a bit dragging. Like we could have cut down on some episodes and given the series a better punch. It sometimes feels like we are getting filler scenes. That being said I am really enjoying it.

and by mainstream tv series i mean the ones with a thai title, not easily available on the internet, the ones older generations watch at like dinner time maybe, usually popular or atleast known inside the country.
sure bl series have huge fanbases even inside thailand, international views are insane, their tv ratings don't seem to be THAT bad when compared to mainstream shows. despite being so popular locally and internationally, for some reason i feel like the bl industry isn't taken that seriously by the main thai award shows. why is that?
and while we are at that,
what are the list of award shows for thai bl actors and bl shows in thailand?
are they relevant enough when compared to the main thai award shows?

I mentioned BLs to my Thai bestie in 2019 and she was completely clueless about everything BL. However, she came back to me in 2020 after 2 Gether came out since she said some of her friends were talking about it. My friend is very mainstream Thai and possibly older than the BL target market. and I don’t think she has seen a BL to this day. She gave me the impression that it was pretty niche…but it could be that in her age group (30s), they are more into mainstream lakorns.
