I live in America where comforters are more standard than duvets and I don't know what I need to complete a duvet. A duvet set consists of a sham and a duvet cover, right? Why is the sham relevant if it's just a fancy pillowcase?
Where is the actual duvet for the duvet cover?? Is a duvet a comforter, or does a comforter go inside of the duvet cover, forming a duvet?
I'm very confused. Please help me.

Breathe :-) I hear you, the world of bedding is overwhelming. Yes, “a sham” is a decorative pillow. A duvet set comes with a duvet cover and 1 or 2 sham pillow covers. There are 2 sizes of sham covers Euro shams are a square, regular sham size is a rectangle that is diff than sleeping pillow sizes. Shams are for decoration after you make your bed, so to speak. I see people usually “throw away”, or never use the “sham cover” in the USA You can put a comforter (more common in the USA) inside of your duvet cover as well as using the comforter without a duvet cover. A comforter is typically made out of polyester filling, and has a built in cover. Making it washable at home. Less animal friendly, a duvet, typically has “down” feather filling... Essentially, a comforter and duvet are the same thing, both can be put into a “duvet cover” with this difference: “Duvet” typically does not have the built in cover, therefore is “bare white” and therefore needs a duvet cover. It is usually filled with down feather too (no home washing) A comforter typically has a polyester filling and has a “built in” aesthetically appealing cover, making a separate “duvet cover” optional. If you want/have 4 sleeping pillows, and want a duvet cover for your your duvet/comforter, you’ll need to buy: Duvet set Comforter/duvet itself 4 pillows king/queen/cali king sheet set (comes with bed sheet, flat sheet, 2 pillow cases) 2 additional pillow cases from your sheet set manufacturer And... if you want the decorative “sham situation”, you’ll need to buy the sham pillows themselves too. Look at the euro sham/regular sham sizing... There is also a breakfast pillow... Which is beyond the scope of today’s bedding102 session :D Good luck!

I think a duvet is supposed to be made of down, but you can totally stick a comforter in there anyway. I’ve found that works for me, at least. Near as I can figure, the word “pillow sham” is basically another word for “pillow case.”
