Grandma here. Been buying sheets for a long time. Look in the 200-400 thread count range, in a 60-40 cotton/polyester blend. Higher than that, the threads are really, really really fine, so you end up with very thin, delicate sheets that don't wear well at all, and feel kinda slithery and floppy. Honestly, the best sheets I've ever bought are these, from Walmart: https://www.walmart.com/search?q=mainstays%20300tc%20cotton%20rich%20percale%20easy%20care%20bed%20sheet%20set&typeahead=mainstays%20300tc Well made, durable, beefy, smooth. What's the lowest threadcount you're willing to go on bed sheets?
Actually going above 300 thread count does make a difference. I have tried all different thread counts all the way up to 1200. It really is a preference thing, and it is not just the thread count but the material as well. Here is my experience: 150 cotton: Scratchy but cheap 300: Much softer still cheap. 600 organic cotton: Very soft. 600 eucalyptus sheet set: Silky smooth; softest sheets I've slept on. 1000 Egyptian cotton: Not as soft as you would think. Very durable will last a long time. Expensive. 1200: same as the 1000 just more expensive. I thought they were a waste of money. Lowest I would personally go is 600, but really it's up to you and what you're willing to spend. Hope this helps More on reddit.com

Read 100s of threads on bed sheets, still confused. Hoping someone can help.
It honestly depends on your personal preference. Brand and thread count are only important up to a point. Material and weave are more important. If you prefer cool, crisp sheets (think nice hotel or rural grandma's house) go with a percale weave. If you want a warmer, clingier feel go for sateen weave. In general, stick with cotton, linen, or bamboo. Synthetics aren't as nice, nor are blends. Linen will be more expensive but if you don't have a particular yen for it, go with cotton. People also ask

What is thread count?

Thread count refers to the number of threads or strands per square inch of fabric, counting horizontal and vertical threads. It indicates how tightly woven the fabric is. This number is an approximate indicator of fabric softness, but does not always translate to higher quality.

Are 1000 thread count sheets worth it?

A high thread count is not always a marker of quality or softness. Thread count has nothing to do with a fabric’s breathability, comfort or softness. A 400 thread count sheet may be softer and more breathable than a 1,000 thread count sheet.

Are 1200 thread count sheets worth it?

A higher thread count is not always a marker of quality or softness. Anything above 1,000 thread count is likely to be of lower quality. Some manufacturers will try to use as many threads as possible, but the softness and quality of the fabric are sacrificed in the process.

Is a Higher Thread Count Really Better for Sheets?
4 weeks ago - A sheet's thread count is the total number of yarns per square inch of woven fabric. A high thread count often indicates finer yarns: You can fit more thin yarns into a square inch than you can thicker or coarser strands. As a result, high thread counts have been associated with high-quality fabric because finer yarns are thought to make the sheets softer and more durable.

A higher thread count can mean a softer, smoother sheet — but only when the threads themselves are high-quality. Using inferior cotton or synthetic blends can result in stiff, heavy sheets even with a high thread count.

The best sheets typically have a thread count between 200 and 400. Any thread count lower than 180 tends to have a rougher texture. Any number over 400 is most likely an inflated figure due to multi-ply thread, meaning you'll pay a premium price for a sheet that doesn't actually feel any softer.
