Median - Wikipedia
1 week ago - The median of a set of numbers is the value separating the higher half from the lower half of a data sample, a population, or a probability distribution. For a data set, it may be thought of as the “middle" value. The basic feature of the median in describing data compared to the mean (often ...
ELI5: What is mean, mode and median from a practical perspective?
Let’s take a set of 5 number (2, 2, 4, 6, 8). The mode is the most frequent number, so it would be 2. The median is the ‘middle’ number, as you said the 50th percentile, so if you arrange the numbers in order then go to the middle number, so at it’s a set of 5 numbers we would go to the third, so it would be 4. The mean is mathematical average, for this you add up all the numbers in the set, then divide by the numbers in the set. So 2+2+4+6+8=22, then we divide this by 5, so 4.4 These three approaches are all ways to describe a set of numbers without having to see the full set of data, however it does mean some detail is lost More on reddit.com
ELI5: What is the actual use of the median and mode in statistics compared to the average (mean)?
Let's say you have 99 randomly selected people in a room with Jeff Bezos. The average net worth of everybody in the room will be approximately $2 billion, because Jeff Bezos is worth $200 billion and there are 100 people in there, and the other people have effectively zero money (compared to $200 billion). But saying "the average net worth in the room is $2 billion" is utterly meaningless because it's really just one person bringing up the average for everybody else. So a more meaningful picture might be the median or the mode... the median is the middle person's net worth. The mode is the most common net worth. These give you a better picture of what the "average" person looks like in the room, than what the actual average tells you. More on reddit.com
what's the point of finding the median?
Lets say you have a company of 5 people. 4 are daily laborers and 1 is the CEO. The salaries are: $12,000, $13,000, $13,000, $14,000, $500,000 (The CEO) If you are looking to hire a new worker, it is a bit misleading to say that the average salary is $110,400. The median accounts for this issue. More on reddit.com
what does the median tell us about the data
That really depends on the data. I'm expecting you know the formal definition. What it effectively does is to ignore large outliers / weigh large groups of outliers less heavily, that could otherwise dominate your data. For example: If you are in a room with 10 minimum wage employees, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk, the mean networth of the group would be something like 20 billion, but the median would be more like 1k. So for a lot of analyses about "human" groups I'd use the median to see what a "typical" person looks like. (In either case you should look at the actual distribution, if you want a good analysis) More on reddit.com

Mean, median, and mode: they're ALL averages...? | Purplemath
Mean, median, and mode are three kinds of "averages". There are many "averages" in statistics, but these are, I think, the three most common, and are certainly the three you are most likely to encounter in your pre-statistics courses, if the topic comes up at all. The average that we're used to is found by adding all the values in a data set, and then dividing the sum by the number of values in that data set; but this average might be misleading.

How to find the Median of numbers?
The median of numbers is the middlemost value of the given set of numbers. It separates the higher half and the lower half of a given data sample. At least half of the observations are smaller than or equal to the median, and at least half of ...

Mean, median, mode and range - BBC Bitesize
January 2, 2024 - Maths has a median score of \(78\) and a range of \(10\) so all the results were close to the mean and the median. ... Sara wanted to know the ages of the children on the school bus. She conducted a survey and her results are shown below: To find the mean add all the ages together and divide by the total number of children. If you type all those ages into a calculator it is easy to make an error.

As previously mentioned, this is one of the simplest definitions of the mean, and some others include the weighted arithmetic mean (which only differs in that certain values in the data set contribute more value than others), and geometric mean. Proper understanding of given situations and contexts can often provide a person with the tools necessary to determine what statistically relevant method to use. In general, mean, median, mode and range should ideally all be computed and analyzed for a given sample or data set since they elucidate different aspects of the given data, and if considered alone, can lead to misrepresentations of the data, as will be demonstrated in the following sections.

4.4.2 Calculating the median
The median is the value in the middle of a data set, meaning that 50% of data points have a value smaller or equal to the median and 50% of data points have a value higher or equal to the median. For a small data set, you first count the number of data points (n) and arrange the data points ...

What Are Mean, Mode, Median & Range in Math?
July 21, 2025 - Since the median is the middle value, it isn’t affected by extremely high or low numbers, which makes it a better measure of the typical value in such cases. On the other hand, the mean is useful when you want a quick average, and your data is evenly distributed without any extreme values.
