Who made the shift dress?
No single designer made the shift dress. Instead, the style evolved over time. Many fashion historians credit Coco Chanel's little black dress as an important precursor to the modern-day shift dress and Mary Quant for popularizing the style in the 1960s. Designer Lilly Pulitzer reinvented it with colorful, bold prints, while Yves Saint Laurent elevated it with a color block motif inspired by the painting Composition with Yellow, Red, Black, Blue, and Gray by Piet Mondrian. November 10, 2021 - In the past few years, shift dresses have popped up in iconic collections of designers like Miu Miu and Prada—each designed by the great Miuccia Prada, who, in our eyes, can do no wrong. Prada revealed that for these collections, “I wanted to break the rules of the classic,” she said. “To discuss a wish of freedom and liberation and fantasy and, on the other side, the extreme conservatism that is coming—the duality out there.” The idea of which is wholly embodied in the shift dress.

Shifting Through Time - The Shift Dress
February 10, 2021 - However, it was during the 1960s when the dress revived itself with a casual, and even shorter, aesthetic. Sadly, its counterpart accessory, the sequin feather headband, did not make it. Some say the shift was the invention of American designer, Lilly Pulitzer, who created the dress using colourful fabric to disguise stains on her clothing from a job at an orange juice stand.

Peter Pan collar blouse, cardigan, knee high socks, heeled loafer. This is a great small print and very neutral, so you could have a lot of fun with pattern and colour! Don’t forget to add a great multi string Pearl choker with pendant; and a beret, cloche, or pillbox hat.

The patterns in the final photo remind me of Marimekko. Maybe some knitted tunics might match, I don't think they have any shift dresses in their current collection by maybe on Etsy they have some from a previous collection.

I love shift dresses. For more vintage inspired ones, check out Marmalade, Unique Vintage, and sometimes ModCloth. For more modern ones, try styles from Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, J Crew, Lily Pulitzer, and Brooks Brothers on Poshmark or other resale sites. These brands still make them, but they made way more 10ish years ago. I realize none of these guarantee long sleeved options, but it’s a start!
