r/marriott on Reddit: Bonvoy is a Loyalty Program for a Reason
February 15, 2024 -

I'm sure you think you can get points if you make your reservation through a third party website but guess what? You can't.

I'm sure this fills you with frustration but it also isn't the hotel's fault that this is how Bonvoy works. It's a loyalty program for a reason. You want points? Book through Marriott and stop shouting at the front desk because they can't give you points for your third party booking.

The word loyalty is actually a funny word. Has anyone wondered what it truly means? I mean, loyalty is reciprocal. Can you say without throwing up that Marriott is loyal to the guests? Every time when someone thanks me for my loyalty, I laugh. I know it’s just part of the script, but it’s rather fun to hear that. I am also “loyal” to Hyatt, IHG, Hilton. I am only loyal to my wife and I expect my wife to be loyal to me as well. On the contrary, this Bonvoy thing is just a business give-and-take. Bill Marriott called it a “frequent-stay program”. Somehow someone started calling this thing a “loyalty program”. Then the sad truth is, from what I have seen these days. most people working for Marriotts have no idea of what it means by putting people first. “What if you trash the room? We have to take 500 USD a night as pre-incidentals.” “You get what you paid for. Next time if you want a suite, pay for it. All these suites are not eligible for upgrades because our revenue manager thinks that it is within the hotel management’s rights to decide what benefits you get to enjoy as a ‘loyal member’.” If you, as an employee, can ever stop saying things like these, then we can start talking about what loyalty truly means.

I always, always, always book direct through the hotel/car rental/airline. If anything goes wrong, the front desk can take care of it themselves. If I book through a third party to save $5 and something goes wrong, I'm stuck on the phone for an indeterminate amount of time for what would likely be a simple fix via the front desk. The front desk CANNOT help you if you booked third party. It's simply not worth the hassle, especially since the savings are minimal at best.
