Software Engineer salaries vary wildly in India. I mean I haven't heard of scenarios in US where for the exact same role the salaries maybe 5-10 times higher based on which company you work at. But that's how it is in India - a senior data scientist in a company like TCS/Cognizant/Infosys earns between 10-15 LPA and would have 5-7 years of work experience .. whereas places like Atlassian might pay 20-30 lakhs for a fresh grad. And a senior data scientist in Microsoft would make above 50 lakhs So the best way to know if you are being paid as per market standards is to check for salary stats for your company/similar company in places like glass door or the salary sharing thread on leetcode etc. P.S - I have 5 years exp and work in a decent org and my salary just hit 22 lakhs this appraisal cycle. 2012: undergrad degree in math with philosophy minor 2012-2015: working in logistics & IT in Seattle, making maybe 50-70K. Learning everything I can. A couple certificates funded by work in Linux sysadmin, ruby development, and data science. I was also the TA for the data science certificate program the following year. 2015: masters in information systems while working part time. 2015-2021: researcher at AWS. Started in Seattle as a research scientist 1 @ 100k, ended as an applied scientist 3 in the Bay Area @ 450k. Learned a lot and made incredible money but burned out hard. Learned a lot about myself and what I value. 2022-present: principal data scientist at a pre-IPO startup @ 250K (still in the Bay Area but working remotely). Work life balance is good, I really enjoy the problem space and the people I work with. It’s a strange feeling realizing that I’m now solidly mid-career, but I’m grateful for how things have turned out.
