The domain itself is the web address. The thing you were thinking of is the DNS server, which is a server that translates domain names to their actual IP address. I personally use Hover for my domains, but Google should be good. Also, avoid GoDaddy like the plague. Before buying a domain, the safest way to look them up is by looking at the ICANN registry directly instead of checking if one is available at the registrar because some will snipe them if you don't buy immediately. r/webdev on Reddit: What exactly is a domain?

Hey guys.
I looked in a lot of places but I'm confused... Title.
I thought that the "domain" was just a server that lets you create and store a name/link with the desired extension that would prevent other people from using it. But then there's services, etc. If I use a site builder, like Wix, what else would I have with a service? I take it, just matters related to domain transfers and such...
Also, does it matter where I buy it? I hear Cloudflare and google is good but godaddy isn't. Why?
Thanks!!

Think of it like a business name. It's just a user friendly name for your website. You must purchase it and it is registered in your name. This is what prevents others from purchasing the same name. Then name servers are like a section of a phone book. Your computer goes there to lookup the section for your website and then looks up the DNS records for your business website. These records are like phone addresses for the various departments of your business. Some departments are at the same address (same server), while some are handled elsewhere. Sometimes you use a 3rd party to handle things (email for example). There's most always a record for the root (the main record for the website) and it points to the server IP Address (like your primary business address).

Computers can handle such addresses easily, but people have a hard time finding out who is running the server or what service the website offers. IP addresses are hard to remember and might change over time. To solve all those problems we use human-readable addresses called domain names. A domain name has a simple structure made of several parts (it might be one part only, two, three…), separated by dots and read from right to left: Each of those parts provides specific information about the whole domain name.
