I read an article in the new Yorker that said Egyptian cotton is just like regular cotton because it has been so badly bred and farmed anymore (for at least the last 15 years). This would explain why it seems there isn't much difference in quality. So it is sort of false advertising. I bought a random towel at a Home Goods store called Feather Touch and it to this day is an anomaly of a cotton fabric and I suspect this is made from real long staple cotton. I cannot find a thing like it anywhere and the brand seems to be defunct. It is like a silky microfiber. I bought it in 2016 or 2017 which might be due to supplies of actual long staple cotton still being available. Leave it to humans to ruin something amazing from nature. More on reddit.com

I haven’t tried the St Geneve Giza, but I have the st Geneve avorio pillowcases and they’re lovely (but they are silk). I love the Sferra Giza sateen. We also have the Finna, which is nice, but I prefer the Giza sateen. I haven’t had the chance to try the Matouk gatsby, but I’ve heard good things. The best would be Giza cotton (not the shitty My Pillow Giza that is not really true Giza cotton) but those tend to be insanely expensive and hardly ever have black as a color. About the closest you can probably find is going to be charcoal, honestly, and Malouf has a Supima set in Charcoal that I can vouch for since my mom has that set (in Smoke color) and it's really soft out of the box and it's pretty easy to care for (she just washes it on delicate and low heat and it's pretty much A-OK). She really likes it and so far there have been no issues on her end (no pilling at all, and gets softer with every wash too---she's had it for half a year so far, btw). I would definitely take a really good Supima set over a shitty 'Giza' cotton one, though, honestly. The higher the price for a sheet set, usually the better the quality, but you'll be pretty stifled if you're set on jet black (or any darker black color) since those are either shit quality or are insanely expensive (and meant for the rich via special order, etc). That's what I'd recommend but the Malouf sheets aren't super cheap, though you might be able to find them cheaper on Amazon or ebay (if you get lucky).
