I've got the general concept down. Basically you use a program you've coded or found to gain access to a system through a vulnerability.
But this is about as much as I've ever been able to gleam off news and YouTube vids.
I did a bit of Python a few years ago (party tricks vs magic essentially: typed up some strings and told a story to my friends) and am beginning an HTML course the day after tomorrow.
From what I understand coding a program requires math and understanding of what the program should do. So what is the understanding you'd need to hack into something?
Disclaimer: I'm not looking to hack anything, taking coding class since it's the one my school offers and am interested in web development.

Essentially, "hacking" is using the rules of a system in a way that the designers had not intended. This usually results in some sort of an advantage for the hacker. For instance, suppose the developer of a program didn't do bounds checking before copying a user-supplied string into another string. Under normal circumstances this isn't an issue since the expected string is fairly short. However, a hacker knows that it isn't actually against the rules to send a much larger string than the developer expected. So a hacker sends a large string which ultimately overflows the buffer and overwrites the return address with a NOP sled. This sled leads to shell code, the shell code is executed, and now the system is doing whatever the hacker says -- because the rules allowed it. In general, those who understand the rules of a system the most are most able to take advantage of them. That's why more experienced hackers are better. They understand the rules better.
