Assad’s Enforcers Brutalized Syria. Now They’re Living Large, Lying Low and Evading Justice.
1 week ago - Officials who once brutally silenced their opponents are now the ones being muzzled. Russia demanded strict prohibitions on using social media or speaking in public, several ex-officials and their relatives said. Security protocols strictly curtail the movements of many top officials, they said. The Russian authorities did not respond to questions about Assad officials living in the country. An even more humbling new reality began for more than 1,200 Syrian officers when they scrambled — and sometimes paid bribes — to board Ilyushin jets headed to Moscow from a Russian base on Syria’s coast.

What are your predictions about what will happen next in Syria?
It is going to be better from now on. Worst is that it will have some time of instability because of the lack of a ready to function government, but it is never going to be as bad as now. The rebels are not interested in picking up fights with anyone except Assad, which is all we want. And form the outcomes we've seen in other liberated cities, seems like a good mindset is everywhere, so I am very optimistic. The global experience Syrians got over the last 14 years makes them more than qualified to build a good country, and I am looking forward to it. More on reddit.com

November 17, 2025 - Partner organizations working with Oxfam, some of which were counting on assistance from the U.S. government, were left with little warning that their aid funds were cut and are now struggling to overcome these budget gaps. The ongoing insecurity in Syria is precipitating additional displacement of people and holding up the rebuilding of schools and health care facilities.

Syria without Assad is lighter - but now there are new problems
Both points amount to a major violation of Syrian sovereignty. The Beit Jinn raid makes it harder for Damascus to offer concessions. Government in Damascus is centred on Sharaa himself, assisted by the foreign minister Asaad al-Shaibani and a few trusted associates. No serious attempt seems to be happening to create an accountable framework of government.

Syrian civil war - Wikipedia
5 days ago - At the Syrian Revolution Victory Conference held at the Presidential Palace in Damascus on 29 January 2025, the new government announced the dissolution of several armed militias and their integration into the Syrian Ministry of Defense, as well as the appointment of former HTS leader Ahmed al-Sharaa as president of Syria. Syrians emptied Assad’s prisons. They’re filling up again, and abuse is rife | Reuters
1 week ago - Prisons and lockups that jailed tens of thousands of people during Assad’s rule are now crowded with Syrians detained by President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s security forces and held without formal charges, a Reuters investigation has found. When Bashar al-Assad fell in December 2024, Syrians converged on the prisons and detention centers, hoping to find loved ones. Sednaya prison, pictured here, is still closed, but others have re-opened.
