An index, in your example, refers to a position within an ordered list. Python strings can be thought of as lists of characters; each character is given an index from zero (at the beginning) to the length minus one (at the end).

For the string "Python", the indexes break down like this:

P y t h o n
0 1 2 3 4 5

In addition, Python supports negative indexes, in which case it counts from the end. So the last character can be indexed with -1, the second to last with -2, etc.:

 P y t h o n
-6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1

Most of the time, you can freely mix positive and negative indexes. So for example, if you want to use find only from the second to second-to-last characters, you can do:

"Python".find("y", beg=1, end=-2)

Embarrassingly, i don't understand how list indexing works
Let us step back a little. Before understanding your example, try to grok the example below for i in range(0, 3): print(i) which results in: 0 1 2 And the example below my_list = [42, 6, 2024] for i in range(0, 3): print(i, my_list[i]) Which results in: 0 42 1 6 2 2024 Are those clear to ya? Curious how Python list indexing works
From what I understand about arrays, the general process to index into an array is that there is a pointer that points to the base address of the array and consequently, the desired element can be retrieved by multiplying the element index by the size of the single element. That's how C works. However, lists are data structures built into Python that also offer the same ability to index but also allow for different element types. Here we're getting into internals of the interpreter, which can differ from one interpreter to another. The CPython interpreter is written in C, so it likely uses arrays of pointers, or arrays of some sort of struct with a pointer pointing to the actual data. Pointers are the same size regardless of what they're pointing to. Jython is an interpreter written in Java, so I would guess that uses a type that is a base class for an object instance. What exactly does it mean to “index” something?
When I hear the term I think of being able to retrieve something quickly with a key (like a hash map) but I’m not quite sure how this applies Yeah, that's roughly the idea. Take a book. Make a list of different topics in the book. Find all the pages where each topic is mentioned. Make a hash map with the topics as the keys and a list of page numbers as the values. That's what the index in the back of a book is. "Indexing" things means building any data structure that makes it faster to find information. The data structure isn't always a hash map. Two other common data structures used as indexes are binary search trees and B-trees. More on reddit.com

New to python, how can I get index of item in list?
I tried collection.index(33) I then get the error "must be str, not int" That would mean that collection isn't a list but something else. When I try with a list it works as expected: >>> collection = [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8] >>> collection.index(1) 0 >>> collection.index(33) Traceback (most recent call last): File "", line 1, in ValueError: 33 is not in list Of course it would help if you supplied your code, preferrably uploaded to a text site like pastebin.com or gist.github.com. How do you handle IndexError when accessing list elements?
Use try-except blocks to catch IndexError exceptions safely. Check list length before accessing elements with boundaries. Validate index ranges to prevent out-of-bounds access errors. IndexError occurs when accessing positions beyond list boundaries. This error happens with both positive and negative indices. Always validate index values before performing access operations. Create wrapper functions that handle IndexError exceptions gracefully. Return default values or None when indices exceed boundaries. This approach prevents program crashes from invalid access attempts.

Can you use negative indices with the index() method?
No, the index() method only returns positive index positions. However, you can access returned indices using negative indexing. The method itself doesn't accept negative search parameters. The index() method always returns values between 0 and len(list)-1. These positive values represent actual element positions in sequences. You cannot specify negative start or end parameters. After getting positive indices from index() method, use them normally. You can convert positive indices to negative equivalents manually. Subtract list length from positive indices for negative conversions.

What is the difference between index() method and square bracket indexing?
The index() method searches for element values and returns positions. Square bracket indexing accesses elements using known position numbers. Index() finds positions, brackets use positions for access. The index() method performs linear search through list elements. It compares each element until finding the target value. Square bracket indexing provides direct memory access using calculated offsets.

December 18, 2024 - If indexing is like opening one locker from a row, slicing is like grabbing multiple lockers at once. Imagine you want everything from locker 2 to 4. Instead of opening each one individually, you make one clean cut and grab them all at once. That’s exactly what slicing does. It lets you grab a portion of a list in one simple command. No loops, no extra logic. You just tell Python where to start, where to stop, and (optionally) how many steps to take.
