r/headphones on Reddit: I have a question about "Treble", "Base", and "Midrange".
October 29, 2020 -

I was looking at the recommendation list for open-back headphones. All of them have different tags attached to those three. What does treble mean? What does Midrange mean? I know what base is. Can someone also explain what they mean with respect to "emphasized", "neutral", and "recessed".

Answer (1 of 4): I have no idea what instrument you’re talking about, so I’ll be general in my answer. It’s very subjective and depends on the kind of instrument you have and the kind of amplifier you have and the kind of music you play and what types of tones you like.

Next question in my never-ending quest to be able to carry on a conversation w/ gearheads and tonefreaks: What frequencies usually define "Mid-Low"? what does mid-range sound like?
I dont think I understand the question? Mid-range is the most important part of music. Mids define the overall accuracy of a speaker. Our human voice is midrange. SO why have incredible clean highs and super low thunder bass if the mid-range is harsh, undefined, or even too forward. More on forums.audioholics.com

On the other hand, consumer headphones can have a slightly unbalanced midrange and still sound OK. For example, some added grittiness to electric guitars can make rock music more enjoyable. Difference between " upper bass", " mid bass" and " lower bass" | Headphone Reviews and Discussion - Head-Fi.org
August 5, 2012 - To me low bass is below 40Hz, mid bass is from 40-80Hz, upper bass is from 80-160Hz, above this you are getting into the lower mids whic is 160-320Hz. the mid mids go from 320 to about 1KHz, from 1KHZ to 3KHzis upper mids to me, this is also the presense region & where human hearing is the sharpest. Lower treble goes from 3KHz to 6KHz, regular treble from 6KHz to 12KHz & high treble is anything above that. Note that I allocate more bandwidth to the midrange type frequencies, close to 6 octaves. These are the most musically interesting frequencies.

Drive: Drive (or input) usually adjusts the signal level being introduced to an amplifier. More drive will push the signal closer to the overload region of the amp, introducing more (hopefully musical) distortion artefacts.Bass: A bass amplifier or "bass amp" is a musical instrument electronic device that uses electrical power to make lower-pitched instruments such as the bass guitar or double bass loud enough to be heard by the performers and audience.Mid: well the mid is the midrange and the treble is high, as the opposite of bass.Treble: It's obvious from the labels what most controls on guitar amps do: the Treble knob adjusts treble (high) frequencies, the Bass knob adjusts bass (low) frequencies, and so on.Presence: In an amplifier, a presence control boosts the upper mid-range frequencies to make the sounds of voices and instruments with similar tonal ranges seem more "present". On the television production studio's sound desk, there can be several presence controls, for several different, switchable, frequencies.Pan: Panning audio lets you distribute sound across the stereo or surround spectrum to create balance or a special effect. For example, you can place more sound in the right channel of a stereo clip or less sound in the centre channel of a surround clip.Reverb: Reverb occurs when a sound hits any hard surface and reflects back to the listener at varying times and amplitudes to create a complex echo, which carries information about that physical space. Reverb pedals or effects simulate or exaggerate natural reverberations.

The midrange determines how prominent an instrument is in the mix. Boosting around 1000 Hz can give instruments a horn-like quality. Excess output at this range can sound tinny and may cause ear fatigue.

Mid/Side Processing Explained - Perfect Circuit
April 25, 2024 - Mid-side (M/S) processing is a unique way of processing stereo audio, ultimately allowing you to manipulate the mid and side information separately. It functions differently than traditional stereo processing, and in some cases can allow for more tailored control over individual mix elements. This type of processing can be useful for fixing issues with stereo image, tonal balance, and clarity—but it’s not just about fixing things. You can get really creative with it, especially for genres like electronic music where there aren’t as many mixing “rules” as more traditional musical styles.
