r/headphones on Reddit: I have a question about "Treble", "Base", and "Midrange".
October 29, 2020 -
I was looking at the recommendation list for open-back headphones. All of them have different tags attached to those three. What does treble mean? What does Midrange mean? I know what base is. Can someone also explain what they mean with respect to "emphasized", "neutral", and "recessed".

They're different parts of the sound frequencies we can hear. Low frequencies are bass. In music this usually contains drums and bass. Mids are a bit higher pitched in the frequency range and contain the main body of the music. Vocals, most instruments, ect. Treble is the high frequencies. Sounds like cymbals, higher pitched vocals. Stuff like that. Then as for emphasized, neutral, recessed, it's basically talking about how noticable those parts of the frequencies are in the sound signature. Having emphasized or louder bass and treble can make music sound "bigger" and "wider" almost, but this often can also make the mid frequencies sound quieter or recessed in comparison. Neutral often means things just don't feel overly emphasized. This doesn't necessarily mean everything is at the same volume, just natural or realistic sounding. For example some neutral headphones have a bit more emphasis on the mids, while the bass and treble aren't as loud, but this can sound more realistic. There's a lot more to it, but that's kind a quick rundown

May 23, 2023 - As a result, you can quickly have too much or too little midrange, so careful tuning is essential. The video below shows how the same song sounds with a lot and very little midrange quantity: ... A typical type of headphones that have a neutral midrange are headphones for mixing. On the other hand, consumer headphones can have a slightly unbalanced midrange and still sound OK. For example, some added grittiness to electric guitars can make rock music more enjoyable. Difference between " upper bass", " mid bass" and " lower bass" | Headphone Reviews and Discussion - Head-Fi.org
August 5, 2012 - To me low bass is below 40Hz, mid bass is from 40-80Hz, upper bass is from 80-160Hz, above this you are getting into the lower mids whic is 160-320Hz. the mid mids go from 320 to about 1KHz, from 1KHZ to 3KHzis upper mids to me, this is also the presense region & where human hearing is the sharpest. Lower treble goes from 3KHz to 6KHz, regular treble from 6KHz to 12KHz & high treble is anything above that. Note that I allocate more bandwidth to the midrange type frequencies, close to 6 octaves. These are the most musically interesting frequencies.

Mid/Side Processing Explained - Perfect Circuit
April 25, 2024 - Mid-side (M/S) processing is a unique way of processing stereo audio, ultimately allowing you to manipulate the mid and side information separately. It functions differently than traditional stereo processing, and in some cases can allow for more tailored control over individual mix elements. This type of processing can be useful for fixing issues with stereo image, tonal balance, and clarity—but it’s not just about fixing things. You can get really creative with it, especially for genres like electronic music where there aren’t as many mixing “rules” as more traditional musical styles.
