ELI5 What is qualitative research method and how does it ensures the reliability and validity of its method?

Qualitative research differs from quantitative research in that it has less to do with numbers and more with opinions.

For example, if you were testing a new drug, you may do a qualitative analysis on how people feel, by giving them questionnaires and asking them about how they feel using the drug. It's impossible to quantify a person's emotions, hence why we use qualitative.

Reliability is mainly to due with how many times you did the procedure. So, asking 2 people won't give very reliable results, but asking 10,000 will give more reliable results.

Validity has to do with the testing method you use. So asking people different questions at different periods after using the drug is not very valid, it'd more valid to ask the same set of questions at the same time after every dosage.

Quantitative vs qualitative data? Which is better? Why?
Well they both have their pros and cons. If you want to study a 'deeper meaning' sort of problem and want to tackle it through more individual case studies then qual is your guy, but quant is best for trying to get 'bigger picture' meanings and general trends. I was looking at a study of alcoholism prevalence in the Navajo a while back and it focussed on qual interviews. I think it was much better that way since you could see how nuanced the issue was and how it's a slightly different experience for each person. More on reddit.com

Arrange your research objective in a table, so it appears visually clear. Avoid working with unorganized data, there will be no conclusive results obtained. 3. Categorize and assign the data : The coding process of qualitative data means categorizing and assigning

Quantitative research methods deal with primary and secondary sources where data is represented in numerical form. This can include closed-question poll results, statistics, and census information or demographic data. Quantitative research data tends to be used when researchers are interested in understanding a particular moment in time and examining data sets over time to find trends and patterns. While qualitative research is defined as data that supplies non-numerical information, quantitative research focuses on numerical data.
