ELI5: What is a Retention Rate?
The rate at which something is retained after you obtain it.
It's most often used with customers and employees - if you hire 50 people, and over ten years 40 stay and ten leave, you have a ten year 80% retention rate
Similarly, if 200 people sign up for your phone service, and 100 renew, you have a 50% retention rate.

Retention rates might not show you the whole story depending on what your videos are about. I have some guitar lesson videos so people will only watch it in parts, or watch the same part over and over etc so it will look bad for my retention rates, but it leads to more views and the watch time is pretty decent too. My videos are between 2 and 5 minutes long generally and my average view duration is just over a minute so that's anything between 20% and 50%. You might not need an overhaul, check the other stats first.

So I'm not expert on this but what I'm learning from other people is that there is no ideal length of a video. It all depends on your audience and what they can handle as far as length of content. My very first video was 25 minutes long and had a retention rate of like 12%. Each video after that I've made has been shorter and shorter, finally getting to my most recent video that is a little over 5 minutes long with 40% retention rate. Longer videos are essentially better, but it doesn't matter if they're long if your audience isn't staying on and watching. I would play around when you're making your next few videos and see what the ideal length would be for your specific audience by looking at the analytics.

Retention rates help you understand how well your app is performing over time, per user. Generally speaking, a higher retention rate is better overall because users who stay active for longer provide more engagement, as well as greater monetization opportunities.
Retention rates are also useful for understanding why many users disengage from apps, and where you stand in the grander scheme of app performance. This can help pinpoint what you can improve and how to extend your users’ lifetime value (LTV).
With your analysis, you could look at how retention develops in your app over a 30-day period. If retention drops at a certain point, a goal may be to increase the number of users who are interested and engaged enough to retain past that date. In gaming, this is often the end of the onboarding period. In verticals like e-commerce, you could find out when purchases occur and optimize for that point in time.
Retention rates give you a potential insight into the longevity of your app. It’s also important to note that benchmarks for retention rates will change depending on app vertical. For example, users may install a travel app before their flight, use the boarding pass and then uninstall once their journey is complete. In this case, a lower retention rate after Day 7 wouldn’t be a cause for concern because it’s common behavior for that vertical.
How can I improve my app’s retention rate?
There are a number of ways to improve retention rates, such as:
