Running a seedbox from home
What is the purpose of the post? Another "look at me trying to ice skate uphill" post? -- VPN vs Seedbox is a long ongoing discussion, have you posted to r/vpn too? The topic never goes anywhere, some folks like VPNs, others like seedbox services - called a market place. There are advantages to a seedbox service (I sigh in repetition) Home Bandwidth is not Datacenter Bandwidth (Peering, QOS, Speed). Ratios on private trackers suffer via VPN, since a seed could be in the next rack over on a seedbox Home Machines tend not to be as seedbox focused as competing hosting vendors make their machines (linux tuning, tweaked clients, bcache, RAID, gobs of memory, dedicated processes) VPNs leak, VPNs throttle speeds, VPN vendors are even less transparent than seedbox vendors. Hardware, software, and networks breakdown, with a seedbox service that isn't your problem, it is their problem. They have support, data center SLA contracts, people who aren't you that care. Seedboxes are loosely coupled, VPNs are tightly coupled, your choice. -- Drives me crazy. Have you considered going over to the Roku subreddit and posting about your own idea about a Raspberry Pi solution? Might be more fruitful (no pun intended) More on reddit.com
Installation always halting at preseeding on VirtualBox. What to do?
I haven't touched a mac in the past 4 years. So my memory is a bit rusty now. Just an idea: did you check if other linux distributions start properly in virtualbox? Try for instance Alpine Linux, it's very small (about 300 MB or below). What are the hardware specs of the host machine? The virtualbox settings could play a role, too. More on reddit.com

Building SEED VM for Apple Silicon Machines
As more and more people are using Apple machines with M1/M2 chips (Apple Silicon), it becomes important to provide a virtual machine for students to conduct the SEED labs on their person computer (we used to ask them to do the labs the cloud). In this project, we are building a virtual machine for the Apple Silicon machine. We document the design choices, progress and the encountered issues in this project.

After the script finishes, a new account called seed is created. We will use this account for all the SEED labs, instead of the default one created by the cloud. We intentionally did not set a password for this account, so nobody can directly log into this account. We can switch to the seed account using the following command (if you do not use sudo, the OS will ask you to type the password, making it impossible to log in): ... For most labs, being able to SSH into the VM should be sufficient.

Would it be possible to set up a seedbox in a VM to practice before I tried to do it live on a server? I'm guessing so, however what would I install to install the seedbox on? Seems like most say they just have the rescue system? Is that just an iso I can install I guess? Thanks!

Yes. Don't worry about the rescue system part. Any provider should have info about what's going on and it should basically just amount to setting up your partitions and what disto you're going to be using through some sort of script or something. On hetzner you're just uncommenting/commenting and changing one or two things in a big install script, it's very easy and they'll tell you what to do so there's really no need to practice that part, plus you can't really anyways if they're using proprietary tools. For the other part where you're setting up your seedbox how you want it, you can totally do that in a vm. You can even network virtualbox vms so you can install your preferred distro and make it headless in virtualbox, and then ssh into it from your machine so it'll be just like setting up a server from ssh. Once you have the distro installed and your ssh keys setup or whatever else you want to do prior to the installation of actual programs, you can clone your vm and keep it in it's blank state as a backup. Now you can install whatever you want, however you want, and if you decide you want to wipe everything and start over you can just delete your vm and clone the backup again. There might be an easier way to do it with snapshots, but i never really use those so idk how they work.
