ELI5: When measuring blood pressure, what does systolic, diastolic and pulse readings indicate about your health?
Blood pressure by itself is just one of a set of vitals that tell us the current “health” of a person. 120 systolic (top pressure) and 80 diastolic (low pressure), or 120/80 (spoken as “one twenty over eighty”), is considered ideal for an adult. However, healthy people’s blood pressure will vary throughout the day and throughout their life for a huge variety of reasons. Obviously huge extremes are cause for concern. People with high systolic pressure, or hypertension, are at risk of a variety of complications; too much pressure. Someone with very low systolic pressure is also at risk, not enough pressure, not enough blood. Each have their causes and effects.
In general, diastolic pressure (the pressure during the heart’s “rest” and refilling period), is less important than its systolic pressure.
As always, your health, including cardiovascular health, should be monitored and treated if necessary by a licensed physician.
