Hi,

I’m new to Discover and I’ve read on here a number of times that you can basically maximize use of the 5% cashback all year round by using gift cards.

I’m not sure I fully understand how that would work. Could someone give a rundown please and any general tips and warnings on using it?

Also, if I have both the credit and debit cards can I pay for my credit card bill using my debit card and earn an extra 1% cashback in total?

All year round? I think you might be misunderstanding But essentially, since this quarters category for 5% back is grocery stores, you can go to a grocery store and buy a $500 gift card. The fee is typically $6, so spending $506 will get you about $25 back. Then any spend that you do that is not within the 5% category, just use the gift card. You can buy $500 three times since the limit per quarter is $1500. You cant pay your discover bill with a debit card, since you need to provide checking/account number. One option is to do a money order and use the gift card on that MO then depositing that MO back to bank account and repeat. But this can get messy and complicated and some store doesn’t even accept prepaid gift card for MO, so I would recommend just buying the gift card and spend it normally. I think they mean buy gift cards from the merchant categories? This grocery quarter is about to end, so if you haven’t reached the cap, go to your main grocery store and buy their gift cards and get the 5% off as the purchase should still code as groceries. If I’m wrong hopefully someone will correct me.
