This may be the most simple question asked on here and I'm just being thick but how do you say what's your name? Or rather, what's the way a native speaker would say it?
In school, I was told it's comment tu t'appelles? however whilst doing duolingo they seem to prefer tu t'appelles comment?
Is this a "yeah both are correct but x sounds wooden and it would mark you as a tourist immediately" type situation?

Native here. "tu t'appelles comment" is the most natural, but "comment tu t'appelles" also sounds very natural. However, "comment **t'**appelles tu" is the expression that would be very "textbook" and fall into the situation you describe (make you sound like a beginner learner). What makes you sound natural is not making the subject-verb inversion, so as long as you do that, you will sound natural!

The 1st and 2nd are the correct way to say it. The 3rd one is the most common, with "comment vous vous appelez ?", even if it's a grammatical mistake. The 4th one is incorrect. Because the verb is s'appeler, not appeler.
