The parking closest to the fort tends to fill quickly so if you're already parked nearby, it'll likely be easier to just walk. The Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco is a magical place that feels like stepping into a storybook.

January 20, 2025 - Every time I’ve gone to San Francisco I’ve seen an absolutely stunning sunset at Ocean Beach. I’ve also gone here early in the morning with coffee and watched the surfers catch some waves. If you do cross Golden Gate Bridge, I highly recommend doing a little hiking in Golden Gate National Rec Area.

r/AskSF on Reddit: What are your must do from SF?
February 12, 2025 -

I'm from Europe and I have never been in the USA before. I'll be in SF for 5 days at the end of may as a friend is doing the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon, he will be focused on the competition so I'll have to do things alone for the 3 days before the competition, was wondering which are the best recommendations of things to do in and around SF like visiting Alcatraz.

I can do one overnighter somewhere else but we have an hotel booked for all the stay in SF so I don't want to lose more than a night. I don't have a car but I don't mind doing a 5h+ bus/train trip if the views are worth it (I enjoy being in a car with views I don't know).

I'm not a city person, I have a preference for activities in the nature or activities where I can meet people as a foreigner. My goal is to get a glance of California with the least amount of time so if I really like something I can come back and directly go there.

Underrated things to do in SF
Non-touristy would be explore neighborhoods that are more locals. That would be Cole valley, Noe valley, inner sunset, inner Richmond, and Valencia street in the mission. For hikes you can hike a few places in the city: twin peaks viewpoint is one of the highest. Touristy things would be going to pier 39 and fisherman’s wharf then over to crissy field and presidio tunnel tops with a stop by the palace of fine arts. More on reddit.com

Things to do in San Francisco ?

Here are my favorite places at/around SF area..

Land's end, Golden Gate Park, Presidio - nice walks

Baker Beach, Marshall's Beach, Battery Spencer - great views of the Golden Gate Bridge

Ghirardelli Square - love their sundaes!

Chinatown- if youre into Chinese food, lots of great food there especially Dimsum!

Palace of Fine Arts, Pier Area

Muir Woods if you can't do Yosemite.. not too far from SF about 30 mins ish.

Yosemite in 1 day wouldn't be enough.. there are lots of great hikes to do and sights to see. I'd say 2 days, 3 nights minimum would be ideal.

Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions. Hope you enjoy your trip!

San Francisco for dummies?
Personally, if I only had 24 hours I would skip museums and soak up the vibes of the city mostly outdoors. I love the ocean, so spending time at Ocean Beach and/or Lands End to soak up the Pacific Ocean would be on my do-list. For a more up-close view of the Golden Gate Bridge, either the visitor’s center from which you can actually walk into the bridge, or Tunnel Tops park where maybe you’ll just chill and enjoy the view. Golden Gate Park is our pride and joy (we love all of our parks, big and small) but given your limited time, either Twin Peaks or Dolores will give you more of a “landmark” experience. A lot of our neighborhoods have early bedtimes; more things will be open later in parts of the Mission and North Beach and the Marina District. ETA: I’m not sure if you’re able to use the Waymo app, but if you are I highly recommend the novelty of a driverless car ride at least once as well! Don’t waste an hour in line waiting for a cable car but pause to admire them or hop on board if the line isn’t long or you’re at a stop mid route. The $8 is a bit pricey, but it is iconic. October 3, 2017 - If you’re looking for an experience (albeit with a touch of mania and chaos), head to San Francisco’s Chinatown, which is crammed full of restaurants, herbal specialists, souvenir shops and specialist grocery stores. You’ll find so many delicious eats here; stop for a bite at Yuet Lee for great seafood, or R&G Lounge for their much-loved salt-and-pepper crab. Don’t miss the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory where they make 20,000 fortune cookies every day! Wanna see the city in style?

July 22, 2023 - It’s home to many historic sites, including the Presidio Officers’ Club, San Francisco’s most historic building that was originally used as a social hub for U.S. Army officers and their families. You can still see the original adobe walls that were erected in 1776. There’s also an old battery that still contains an operational early 20th-century gun like the ones that once defended the city’s coastline. Don’t miss the Palace of Fine Arts while you’re there.
