Hello, Sorry I feel like this should be common sense but I want to ask anyways. When buying a new car (I am in the state of Oklahoma) do I pay taxes at the dealership on the purchase price of the car, and then do I pay them again when I get the license plate at the tag agency? I know when I get the license plate I have to pay the excise tax which is around 1000 on the car I am looking at, I am just not sure if I pay that at first also when im buying the car from the dealer itself.

You pay multiple taxes on a car purchase, depending on state. The dealership will usually arrange everything though, that's why they're there. In the end, you should just get an itemized bill with car price, sales tax, any registration fees, any excise taxes (assuming they're paid at time of purchase), etc. You shouldn't need to go get your tags/plates yourself, you're already paying the dealer a fee somewhere in the paperwork to do this for you.

The dealership generally pays the taxes. I just went to an OKC dealership page and this was at the bottom. The advertised price does not include sales tax, vehicle registration fees, finance charges, documentation charges, and any other fees required by law. Which leads me to believe that it's the same there as it is where I live.

Hi all,
In November I found a decent deal in Kansas and drove the car home to Oklahoma. I was told and have in writing that they will levy the taxes and file for my registration. The taxes in Oklahoma are 4.5% so they charged 4.5% of the sale.
I paid the car and the taxes in cash.
Fast forward to now, just today I received a package from the dealership with title and all of the paperwork. I called dealership who stated to go to my local tag agency and register.
When I went to register car at my tag agency today, to my surprise, they told me I would be charged taxes again.
This made no sense to me. Where did the original taxes paid to the dealership go?
I called dealership in front of tag agency reps and someone from finance department at the dealership said that Oklahoma is a double tax state meaning I’d have to pay those taxes again. This is absolutely not true as verified by the tag agency rep. I have also purchased other cars from out of state in the past and have never dealt with this. Despite talking to the rep the dealership didn’t budge and wouldn’t find any solution.
Now I’m stuck with this unregistered vehicle on the hook for another 2k in taxes.
My question is: what can I do to get the dealership to return my tax money? As far as I know, this is basically theft and I also have a document (certificate of tax collected on purchase of vehicle for a non resident) that states that $2,000 were allocated for taxes

I’d go up the chain at the dealer. Like GM. They should have sent a check to the DMV that they collected taxes on behalf of. Or they should have sent a check back to you. Only exception would be states like CA (idk about KS or OK) where if the car touches their roads, you owe sales tax, even if it’s not being registered there

Here in CA, if you take delivery and drive on CA roads you pay tax here, then in your home state. If you ship the car it avoids sales tax here. I've heard in some other states if you pay sales tax in the state you purchase from then go to register it in your home state, you're only on hook for sales tax if there's a greater difference. IE, if you paid 4.5% in Kansas then in Oklahoma it's 6% you would pay 1.5% sales tax once you register it. Ultimately comes down to how each state operates.
