Is it too early to fertilize/seed - Houston Texas
Yes - it is still early January. We will get more cold weather for the next month or so, and the grass won't come roaring back until we have both consistently warmer weather and longer days. Don't fertilize until you are mowing at least every 10 days.
Around your area that is probably closer to mid-late March (or early April) depending on weather. Also, make sure your early season fertilizer applications aren't too nitrogen heavy (use something with a low of slow release nitrogen like Milorganite). Warm season grasses are at their peak in the mid-summer months (June, July, Aug) and that is when you want to fertilize most heavily.

Houston- Bermuda Grass - When to scalp and fertilize?
Is the grass showing any signs of waking up? What I did last year (in central NC), is when it started to wake up (or even a little before), I scalped it. This allowed the sun to get down to the soil and warm it up faster.

Weather is already in the 60s+, and my lawn is starting to sprout through the dead grass. Is it too early to fertilize at this point?
It's a half acre, and it's horrible right now. Half dead and muddy. Our three dogs have done a real number on the yard this year. I really need to figure out a way to get it back to a place that is serviceable for the dogs and to make it visually appealing (as much as possible).
I don't want to spend, nor do I have right now copious amounts of money to throw at the lawn, I am hoping to fertilize it, dethatch it when it dries up a bit, and overseed it to help bring it up a bit.
Thank you!

Also, what grass do you have? Most southern grasses are best sodded instead of seeded. If it’s really sunny you could seed Bermuda in late spring, early summer
