Big Lots is closing five stores in California and an additional 14 stores nationwide as the company continues to navigate through Chapter 11 bankruptcy, court documents show. Big Lots announced in September that the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and planned on closing more than 340 stores. The closures are occurring due to affiliate Nexus Capital Management LP acquiring Big Lots as part of a sale agreement, the retailer said in a news release.

Before any stores were closed, California had 109 stores (including the Apple Valley DC) listed on the website. Currently, there are 48 listed with 38 of those either closed or in liquidation. The one exception is the DC, which is closed already, but no closing banner.
I'm very much an optimist, but it is not looking very promising.

The whole California thing makes no sense to me and I think shows their real lack of any good plans. They reopened Redding, CA and Carson City, NV but they just announced a bunch of stores in Southern California, 1 in Idaho, and Sparks, NV closing. How does this make any sense in retail terms? The drive time from Durant to Redding is 28 hours! I can't even fathom the amount of freight shipping charges they'll pay. Sure, the DC costs less to run but that's gotta be thousands of dollars per truck to deliver it. I can't fathom how that's even close to economical. I am beginning to think this company won't make it long term. The decisions they're making and path they're taking seem to be the exact same as they've made all along. They talked like everything was going to change once bankruptcy started but the decisions are all confusing and make no economic sense. Apparently they're basing decisions 100% on rent costs. At the same time they started jacking prices down to try and compete. Make it make sense!
