r/texas on Reddit: Property taxes on Leased Vehicles?
December 22, 2024 -

Hi all, I tried googling but am getting inconclusive answers.. I recently moved to TX from a state that did NOT charge property taxes on vehicles.. Can anyone confirm if I will be needing to pay property taxes for Texas for my new- leased vehicle? Really hoping not😭 Sidenote- this is my first vehicle ever purchasing, so I am new to all of this stuff anyways.

Any help is appreciated & if it helps to know- I purchased an EV and got the $7500 tax credit.

EDIT- I had until April 2025 to submit a leasee's Property Tax Exemption Affidavit thingy... Thank GODDD. I called my bank (well, the company that I'm leasing through)- and they sent the form over IMMEDIATELY. Thank God.. I had been saving up ~$3k in anticipation.

All other motor vehicle transfers made without payment are defined as sales and are subject to tax calculated on the standard presumptive value of the vehicle. Both the vehicle donor and recipient must complete Form 14-317, Affidavit of Motor Vehicle Gift Transfer (PDF), which describes the transaction and the relationship between the parties. The affidavit must be notarized by a public notary of Texas or another state, or witnessed by an authorized employee of a Texas county tax assessor-collector's office.
