February 4, 2026 - The organization was founded in 1953; it rebranded to PCC Natural Markets in 1998 and then to its current name in 2017. PCC is a member-owned and operated cooperative. The members govern through established bylaws and yearly elect a board of trustees who represent the interests of the members.

January 2, 2026 - PCC Natural Markets changes its name to PCC Community Markets to better reflect its community ownership and commitment to the Pacific Northwest.

May 3, 2023 - For years, PCC Community Markets made industry headlines for opening green-certified stores, switching to compostable packaging, banning BPA in its receipts and other leading wellness and sustainability initiatives. But in the past few years, the country’s largest cooperatively owned food market — a grocer that prides itself on being a model employer, community leader and corporate citizen — has generated headlines for different reasons.

The state's first recorded cooperative was the Skamokawa Farmers Creamery Association, a marketing co-op formed in 1898 by dairy farmers in Southwest Washington. Now, more than 100 years later, Washington has food cooperatives like PCC, electricity co-ops, outdoor-equipment co-ops, worker co-ops, housing co-ops, medical co-ops, cooperative banks and credit unions, artist co-ops, even funeral co-ops, among others. Cooperatives are owned by their members, and the Rochdale Principles mandate democratic control by membership vote.

January 11, 2025 - In a May 22 letter to members, President and CEO Krish Srinivasan of PCC Community Markets noted that after a difficult 2023, this will be a pivotal year for the future of that longtime Seattle-area co-op.

May 23, 2020 - With the big conventional grocers carrying more and more organics, and competitors including Portland-based New Seasons and now Amazon-owned Whole Foods encroaching on PCC’s traditional domain, the local consumer-owned grocery co-op is renaming itself PCC Community Markets.
