June 1, 2004 - Included in this new regulatory structure were broadcast licensing requirements that the FCC charged fees to obtain, leading to the shuttering of some smaller radio stations and the start of the dominance of a few large radio companies. This consolidation caused concern, and lead to the development of the Local Radio Ownership Rule, which puts a cap on the number of stations that a single company can own within a specific market. In 1941, the FCC adopted a similar rule to curb conglomeration within the growing televsion market, banning TV duolopies and preventing one company from owning two stations that serve the same market. Media conglomerates, like other conglomerates, are typically formed through the process of Mergers and acquisitions, which allow for a company to absorb another entity either by taking control of its assets or consolidating the two.

90% of American media are owned by 6 companies. What are the social effects of this?
The problem is that people know the national news agencies are corporate owned so they are often distrustful of them however they don't know their local news is often owned by massive corporations. They should be equally distrustful of the local news but instead people often trust it more. This is becoming less prevalent as the younger generations are less likely to watch TV or consume news from any more traditional source. More on reddit.com

On top of its incredible TV and movies, TimeWarner also controls several big-name print assets, including TIME (obviously). TimeWarner has one of the most diverse investment portfolios of any media company. Their investments act as controlling interests in lots of companies, some of which arenโ€™t related to media. But no matter what they are, each investment gives TimeWarner a stronger foothold in media. As the owner of DC Comics, Looney Tunes, and tons of other fictional characters, it makes sense that TimeWarner owns a list of accomplished video game studios.

December 13, 2023 - Spurred by Reagan-era economic policies and the FCCโ€™s deregulation campaign, the media industries converged in a series of M&A waves that began in the 1980s with the News Corpโ€“Fox, Time-Warner, and Sony-Columbia mergers and culminated in the acquisition of Universal by GE, NBCโ€™s owner, and the launch of NBC Universal in 2004. At that point, the Big Six owned all the major film studios, all the broadcast networks, and most of the top cable networks.

Ok so does this even matter or cause any problems? https://www.businessinsider.com/these-6-corporations-control-90-of-the-media-in-america-2012-6

I don't even know if this 90% owned by 6 companies is correct because it looks like it is from a blog.

I don't think this matters because people can easily choose other sources of news. They can freely go on Google, Bing, or other internet browsers to find another website. It is not like the American government bans or restricts websites.
