Later on in the musical, Nessa becomes desperate for Boq to truly love her and accidentally mispronounces a love spell that shrinks his heart. To save his life, Elphaba turns him into a tin man.

Answer (1 of 2): Elphaba frees a lion cub from Shiz during the first act. Boq tells the chorus he becomes the cowardly because he never learned to fight for himself, since Elphaba fought the lion’s fights for him. Once again, Elphaba’s good intentions and deeds are lost on the citizenry.
