When J.R.R. Tolkien Worked for the Oxford English Dictionary
i recall a (probably apocryphal) story that, when the page proofs of The Hobbit got sent to Tolkien, he noted with some annoyance that "dwarves" and been changed to "dwarfs" and "elves" had been changed to "elfs". when he asked why this had been done, the typesetters said that they'd consulted the Oxford English Dictionary. Tolkien is said to have responded "I wrote the Oxford English Dictionary!". More on reddit.com
TIL that the Oxford English Dictionary was written largely by a murderer from a mental institution
There is a pretty good book called "The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary". It's a very interesting read about this subject. More on reddit.com
TIL J.R.R. Tolkien worked for the Oxford English Dictionary and is credited with having worked on a number of words starting with the letter W, including walrus.
The editor (or maybe it was publisher) for Lord of the Rings wanted "elves" and "dwarves" to be "elfs" and "dwarfs". They told Tolkien that's how it was in the dictionary. He responded, "I wrote the dictionary."* *Story may be apocryphal, but I still enjoy it. More on reddit.com
This American thinking America wrote the dictionary 😭😭
A particularly stupid individual I know was very adamant that Oxford was one of the best universities in the USA... So... Maybe this was a relative? This wasn't her, this reads way too logically to be her. More on reddit.com

August 16, 2012 - Furnivall was appointed in 1857 to the Philological Society’s Unrecorded Words Committee (it is likely, in fact, that Furnivall suggested to Richard Chenevix Trench that the Society collect early words not recorded in contemporary dictionaries). Furnivall became the editor of the New English Dictionary after the death of Herbert Coleridge in 1861.

October 12, 2022 - For the rest of the 1890s, Minor would send as many as 20 quotations a day to the subeditors in Oxford. His submissions had a ridiculously high acceptance rate; so high, in fact, that in the OED’s first volume—then called A New English Dictionary, published in 1888—James Murray added a line of thanks to “Dr.

The Story Behind the Creation of the Oxford English Dictionary - Bauman Rare Books
September 3, 2025 - I guess there is some personal fascination with the dictionary, but who doesn’t appreciate a well-chosen word, a lovely turn of phrase, or the etymology of an interesting term? In 1928, when the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) was finally completed after a little over seventy years, British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin began his toast with the remark that if he were lost on a deserted island, he would choose the OED for company because, “Our history, our novels, our poems, our plays — they are all in this one book.” I fully agree.
