What is the Whois database?
Each time a domain is registered, the registrant must give registrars (like us) up-to-date contact information. This information is listed in a giant public address book known as the Whois database.
This database helps users find information about any domain name. It also means that a designated contact is established for the domain should any questions arise, such as a legal contact to discuss copyright infringement or technical contact to find out DNS configuration.
How can I find domain name information when it is hidden in WHOIS?

Domain Tools offer a whois history service and their records go back to the year 2000. I've never found another working whois history service (paid or free), and I've spent a while looking.
I'd suggest looking at the Wayback Machine. It stores old copies of many websites and if the domain you're interested in was archived there may be a contact page or headers telling you who owned or developed the site during a particular period.
Hi, I know that there are some paid services that offer this info but I'm looking for a free one. To be more specific I would like the contact details for one domain without paying anything or entering any cc info.
I was in contact with one person via email, but their domain expired recently so I can't contact them that way (the email was [email protected]). The same person also had a reddit acc but is not responding to I'm hoping that a whois record from before the domain expired contains some valid contact info so I can use that (phone/other email/name/....)... if anyone knows of such a service or has an account at one of the paid sites and a look up for one domain wouldn't cost them anything and would be willing to do it for me I would be extremely grateful.
For option two please pm me and I'll give you the domain.

DomainTools AFAIK is the only agency that keeps a detailed history on domain names. If the domain was registered with privacy added on initially, then the whois history will reflect only that leaving you out $49.
