What resource (paid or free) has the most historical whois records? I've been using domain research suite but they only have back to 2011. Does anyone know a better alternative that has more data?

r/webhosting on Reddit: How to get the domain whois history for one domain for free?

Hi, I know that there are some paid services that offer this info but I'm looking for a free one. To be more specific I would like the contact details for one domain without paying anything or entering any cc info.

I was in contact with one person via email, but their domain expired recently so I can't contact them that way (the email was [email protected]). The same person also had a reddit acc but is not responding to I'm hoping that a whois record from before the domain expired contains some valid contact info so I can use that (phone/other email/name/....)... if anyone knows of such a service or has an account at one of the paid sites and a look up for one domain wouldn't cost them anything and would be willing to do it for me I would be extremely grateful.

For option two please pm me and I'll give you the domain.

Sorry if this is the wrong sub, I don't know where to post this. I remember reading in an article about Jacob Wohl when he first tried to discredit Robert Mueller, an investigative reporter with a background in tech started doing some digging into his company. When he ran a whois on his website, it was protected by whatever service the registrar offers to hide that info. However, the reporter then used a different site that I don't remember the name that can lookup historical whois records and see what that data contained before beginning to use that service. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I want to look up the age of a domain and how many times it's been transferred. I used the Godaddy lookup, but it doesn't seem to tell me how many owners the site has had. I also tried DomainTools and it said I would have to pay $50 to see the site history. I'm looking at who.is, but again, I don't see how many owners the site has had. Where does it share this info?

r/Domains on Reddit: How to discover the history of a previously active domain.
December 2, 2021 -

In the ancient times (around 2000-2003) I had a class involving creating websites. College by the way.

I bought a silly domain, something like greatcookiesareawesome.com <--- NOT THE ACTUAL DOMAIN. I used it for my class projects.

I graduated. Had a copy of my work in a usb flash drive thing. I did not renew the domain after graduating college not the hosting.

The other day I found the usb flash drive thing. I have like over 100 of them in a big box. It fell off that box.

I went to look for the domain and guess what? no one registered it. So i registered it. It forwards to my current domain.

The whois obviously says November 2021 as creation date.

However the domain was alive at around 2000-2003 (I can't remember the exact year(s)). Is there a way to search for the history of the domain. Not the wayback machine of the contents, but the whois records (Domain History). Even though it hasn't been active from roughly 2003-2021. Roughly for the past 18 years.

r/privacy on Reddit: Are historical Whois records subject to deletion under GDPR?
June 20, 2020 -

Long story short - young and dumb me registered three domains under my real name and real address back before it became an option to make a private registration. Domains have since been deactivated. But the Whois data is now stuck in pay-per-view databases such as Domaintools and Whoisology. That’s two of the websites that so far are refusing to take my address down. Other websites I managed to have it deleted. Do I have a case here under GDPR? The info is only available if you pay for a subscription, but other than that yes it will spit out my address when looking me up under my government name.

r/Domains on Reddit: Need help finding historical WHOIS info for illicit.com
January 25, 2025 -

I’m trying to get in touch with the current owner of illicit.com. the live WHOIS is fully privacy protected (TieredAccess link only). I’ve already sent a message through the proxy, but I’d like to see any pre‑privacy WHOIS records in case an older email or name is still floating around.

free tools (ViewDNS, WhoisXMLAPI free tier, etc.) haven’t given me any luck, and DomainTools is pay‑walled. if anyone with access to DomainTools, DomainIQ, or similar could share the registrant contact that showed before privacy was enabled I’d really appreciate it.

what I have so far - historical A/MX/NS data from SecurityTrails (lots of Bodis, GoDaddy NameFind, eNom). TieredAccess contact ID 606c305e‑e17f‑485d‑8c40‑e80cf63b1d9c (searching that string didn’t bring up any other domains).

not looking for an appraisal or to sell anything. just trying to locate a valid contact. any pointers would be awesome
