r/AmazonSeller on Reddit: Looking for advice getting started with Selling on Amazon buying wholesale products.
August 10, 2023 -

I'm looking in to trying out selling on Amazon, and doing it using wholesale for the better profit margins. Mostly toys and plush items at a small scale. I'm not looking to replace my day job with it, but more so to help get a little extra income and just see what happens.

I'm in Illinois, and from what I've read so far I will need a certificate of resale to be able to purchase items without paying tax from a wholesaler in order to resell them. Also will need a business license/permit in order to apply for the certificate of resale. Is this all I need?

Do I also need to form an LLC to be able to purchase from wholesalers? I noticed a lot of sites I visited required a business name in order to register to view prices or make purchases.

Am I going about this the right way? I was hoping to avoid creating an LLC until I tried things out for a bit to see if the profits were worth being in it for the long haul, and to make filing taxes a little easier since I do them myself (not sure how much more complicated they become however with forming an LLC). Any advice would be appreciated, I do plan on purchasing a book to read on how to get started and browsing some tutorials, but wanted to see if I'm on the right track, since I've never done anything like this before.

Who told you that wholesale has better margins? The reality is that you will join a listing with 30 other sellers probably buying in much larger quantity than you and getting better prices from the distributor. Your profits may be negative unless you have found a product no one else is selling.

October 13, 2025 - Once you determine your wholesale business model, you can start your research on the best items to buy in bulk and sell on Amazon. Demand trends, your business model, the capital you have available and your fulfillment methods all play a major part in which wholesale products you choose. The best wholesale product is one in which demand leads to high sales and profit margins. You may have found the right supplier with great wholesale prices, but if there’s no market demand for the product, you’re going to lose money.

Amazon Wholesale: The Complete Guide to Selling Wholesale on Amazon in 2024
April 4, 2024 - While wholesalers purchase and resell existing branded products, private label sellers create their own branded products to sell on Amazon. Because of this difference, wholesalers do not necessarily need to create new product listings. Instead, they add their offer to an existing product listing. Private label sellers must create their own product listings. Dropshippers list goods for sale on Amazon without taking ownership of the product first.

In my experience, finding good distributors is one of the hardest parts of doing wholesale on Amazon. Nobody is going to want to tell you their sources. It only creates more competition for themselves. This is one of those instances where you’re going to have to do the hard work yourself. If you’re talking about doing online/retail arbitrage, it can be just about anywhere. Walmart, Kohl’s, Macys, and many other retailers have online close outs. There’s also lots of discount sites like Sierra.com, woot.com, steep and cheap etc. there’s like 100 more too. Understand your numbers, Look for something that you can sell for 3x what you paid at least. If you find something you think you can sell, buy ‘em and send ‘em in. See what happens. That’s the best way to learn. Full disclosure: Wholesale is work. There’s lots of competition and slim margins. The real play for little guys like us is to save up a nest egg while we learn, then go PL. There’s more to learn and more ways to lose, but once you get a small catalog of products selling, it’s a lot easier. That’s how I got started, but it was a different game 10 years ago. I was a flipper before that too, just to support my hobbies. Once I got into Amazon, I saved ALL my profits from flipping until I had enough to get my first product started. If you want to learn how to be a flipper, go sub to r/flipping . It’s kind of fun sometimes. Especially when you earn yourself some decent money just cruising around at your leisure meeting up with people to buy/sell shit. I always tell people they could probably make some money today if they set their mind to it. Here’s something I still do for fun all the time: Go on Craigslist and set the map to within 10 miles of your house, set max price to $500 (or whatever) select listed today, no duplicates, has pictures, for sale by owner. Sort by newest. Search under ‘all for sale’. This gives you an in-order list of everything that’s been listed that day near your house. It’s the new listings where you can strike gold. I also will sometimes put the name of the wealthiest nearby area in the search bar. Sometimes rich people practically give things away that cost thousands of dollars. I see tons of super cool stuff for cheap all the time. It helps if you’re near a city. CL is pretty dead a lot of places.
