r/deadpool on Reddit: Why was Channing Tatum in Deadpool 3?
August 2, 2024 -
Genuinely curious why Channing Tatum portrayed Gambit? Not hating here but Taylor Kitsch originally portrayed Gambit in origins so was wondering if there was any official reason why he didn't reprise this role. threw me off a bit cause it wasn't much of a cameo per se, still thought it was funny tho. Also don't really think this is a spoiler seeing as it was announced a year before the movie even came out but I'll add the flair anyway.

About 10 years ago it was announced that Channing Tatum would star in a Gambit solo movie. That movie never got off the ground and was eventually canceled when Disney bought Fox. This is why in the movie Gambit says: It feels like I was born here.

Former Gambit Actor Confirms if He's Ever Returning to the Role Alongside Channing Tatum in the MCU [Exclusive]
October 1, 2025 - Originally lined up for a small role in X-Men: The Last Stand, the Cajun card-slinger was never a big-screen priority, despite Channing Tatum’s name circling the role for years. That false start was followed by an even stranger twist: Gambit was finally in play for X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), but when Tatum’s schedule kept him tied to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the part went instead to Friday Night Lights alum Taylor Kitsch.

December 6, 2025 - However, Wolverine was not well received by critics, and Kitsch's performance did not make him the breakout hit that Fox executives had expected. Why Taylor Kitsch's Gambit Only Appeared In X-Men Origins: Wolverine - IMDb
After the studio's original mutant trilogy came to an ignominious end in 2006 with "X-Men: The Last Stand" (a film that saw alleged sexual harasser Brett Ratner replace alleged sexual predator Bryan Singer at the helm), Fox decided to soft reboot the franchise by making a prequel film about Hugh Jackman's Man With the Adamantium Claws. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" even teed up potential spinoffs by introducing Ryan Reynolds as a pre-Deadpool Wade Wilson and Taylor Kitsch as the Ragin' Cajun himself, the smooth-talking, card-chucking thief Remy LeBeau, better known as Gambit.

Taylor Kitsch Gives His Thoughts On A Gambit Spin-off - Gambit - Comic Vine
I'm not crazy about either Gambit or Deadpool having their own solo films. Wolverine had to wait 3 whole films before he got a solo film. A couple of support characters who had about 15 minutes of air time each are now rumoured to get their own spin-offs which will cost millions of dollars to produce?? It just seems a little hopeful to me... I mean, I can't blame Kitsch or Reynolds for wanting to carry on playing the characters (and getting lots of money & adoration that comes with it ;) but after 15 minutes of screen time I'm not convinced they can carry a whole 90 minute film.
