r/paypal on Reddit: Is PayPal balance the same as PayPal credit? How to know if you owe PayPal then?
May 23, 2023 -

Hi guys so I have some money from my side hustle in my PayPal account that my employer send them to me, I don't have any card in this account (physical card, I have one WISE so it doesn't count cause I don't even use it almost at all) so they money stay there. Today I made a food order using my PayPal balance and the sum was deducted from it but my receipt said that I paid with a credit card!!! So I'm confused, the sum is taken from my account when I order, I don't have a negative balance of course but the receipt said credit card....so now I ask do I owe PayPal money? Is pp balance the same as pp credit? I read that you can use a PayPal credit card but you have to pay them back and if you don't then comes the real problem.....how do I know if I owe them money?

thanks for reading my message.

If you do not have a card linked to PayPal, not sure why it would say credit card on your receipt. Click the transaction in PayPal and look at the “Paid by” section. Does it say “PayPal Balance”? PayPal has Buy Now Pay Later options: (PayPal Credit (virtual credit line), Pay in 4, and Pay Monthly) where you have to pay it back but you have to apply for it. And which receipt did you look at? The email that PayPal sends you?

r/NoStupidQuestions on Reddit: How does a PayPal balance/PayPal account function independently of an actual bank account?
June 9, 2023 -

Does not the $$ in the balance have to have come from a bank account, originally? Can the PayPal balance be spent without it showing on any statement of any bank account (as far as I understand cards - not bank accounts - are connected to PayPal, but... cards correspond to bank accounts?) Is there a PayPal balance/account balance independent of any of the cards attached? Never used it before.

It works independently because PayPal is entirely separate from your bank. It is basically just a company that handles money transactions. Say you had a friend you owed money but you had no way to give them this money. You do however have another friend that is going to see the first friend, so you give the second friend the money owed to pass on when they see the first friend. PayPal is like this second friend, it is an intermediary that can help transfer money between people and/or businesses. PayPal doesn't do it to be friendly though, they make a profit by taking a cut of these transactions. Does not the balance have to have come from a bank account, originally? No, it could also come from selling something and being paid through PayPal. At least in some regions you can also use certain gift cards as a source of funds for a PayPal account. can the PayPal balance be spent without it showing on any statement of any bank account Yes, your PayPal balance has nothing to do with your bank accounts. It is entirely separate.

PayPal is fundamentally a bank itself (and does have banking licenses), so they can keep and manage a fiscal account for you. That's what they do. You can give PayPal the permission to draw money from your bank account, but you don't have. If you don't, you need to transfer money from your bank account to your PayPal account manually or make do with whatever other PayPal users send you. All the Credit Cards or Bank Accounts connected to a PayPal account got added by the user for convenience.
