I bought an M3 Air last year after primarily being a Windows user for, well, ever. Both my work computer & laptop are windows based, so the MacBook is just for general/personal use - browsing, shopping, etc.
I have found myself gravitating away from using it because Safari drives me batshit. I cannot deal with every link that I click on being opened in a new tab. I prefer to keep everything condensed in a single tab (unless I’m browsing multiple sites at once, in which case I’ll dedicate a tab to each). I can’t find any info on how to bypass this. Is there a way to force open links in a the same/a single tab? And if so, how?
God please help, this is driving me nuts! - I’m on iPadOS 16.4 Beta 2, not sure exactly when it started, but most of the time I tap on a hyperlink or a link from a search engine it opens it on a new tab. I have the “Open tabs in background” setting turned off, yet it still happens.
Originally I thought it was happening because of Microsoft Bing’s default setting is to do that, but it also happens while on Google, not sure it it’s a bug from the Beta software (could be but no word from release notes if I recall).
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Appreciate the feedback!
This is something that I have noticed in the past year or so and it's really annoying! Who wants to have 20 windows open at one time? I just want to click the link and have it open in my current page like it used to. Why do they change things like that? Why??? I highly doubt anyone wants this to be the default. At least tell us how to turn the damn thing off.
Ditto for me as well. I absolutely hate this! I think it may be Rakuten, Honey or another shopping extension but I've had those installed for years and the problem only arose in the past year and a half or so. Somebody needs to fix it.
I’ve got “open pages in tabs instead of windows” turned on, however every time I click a link in the Mail app, or anywhere else really, it opens a new window
How do I fix this?
In Safari > Preferences > Tabs, there's a preference for setting when pages should open in windows or tabs.
Look here:
- Open Safari > Preferences and select Tabs along the top
- Under the option for "Open pages in tabs instead of windows:" select "Always" from the drop-down.

This will force every application to open links in tabs.
So this is strange - I just got this to work.
In the above window I set "Open pages in tabs instead of windows: Always" and then I unchecked the option for command-click opens a link in a new tab. After doing that - links from external apps opened as a tab in the same window.
Is it possible with Safari 15.3 (Mac OS) to open external links (like from Mail or Messages) in a new **tab**, instead of a new window? I've been debating whether I'd switch back to Safari permanently, but the fact that links open in new windows is seriously annoying.
The focus mode filter in macOS 14 allows opening external links in selected Focus Tab Group or Profile in Safari.
System Settings > Focus > SELECTED_FOCUS_MODE > Focus Filters > Safari > Allow opening external links in your Focus Tab Group - On

It could be better, such as opening in the same tab group on default, but it's Apple.
Workaround: drag the link from the external application onto the "new tab" (+ icon) at the top of the preferred Safari window. The link will open in a new tab in this (tab group or other) window.
