Remember, Fiyero had no idea the Wizard would ask Dorothy, a twelve year old kid of all people, to kill Elphaba. He most likely was just trying to be a decent person and help a scared lost child get home/to safety. As much as he probably hated to admit it, The Wizard and/or Glinda were the people most likely to help her, given she has Nessa's shoes. I imagine the scenario went something like this: Fiyero meets Dorothy as she's making her way down the Yellow Brick Road, and after convincing her to get him down from the pole, he felt obligated to get this poor lost kid somewhere safe (and possibly shove her off to someone responsible to help her with her little problem of getting home.) But then things get way more complicated when they finally do get to the Wizard and the Wizard demands they kill Elphaba/retrieve her broomstick. And potentially seeing an opportunity in this, Fiyero then helps plot Elphaba faking her death. He goes along with the witch hunt, possibly even planting the seed in her head that water would melt her, in service of this plan. Luckily things work out: Dorothy "melts" Elphaba, Dorothy goes home, and Fiyero runs off to reunite with Elphaba after things die down. Answer from Never_Look_Back on reddit.com

r/wicked on Reddit: Why did Scarecrow help Dorothy go see the Wizard?
July 28, 2024 -

Fiyero just left the Wizard's guard to be with Elphaba, which is the entire reason he became the Scarecrow (because the other guards were going to kill him probably). He's on Elphaba's side and knows that the things people say about her are wrong.

So, if things go as they went in The Wizard of Oz, why did he go with Dorothy and help her to meet the Wizard and potentially go along with the witch hunting? (granted, he's not on stage for March of the Witch Hunters, but neither is Dorothy, and she's the reason its happening)

Well, we have to speculate as there's no canon reason but it's not too much of a stretch to assume a few things. Dorothy helped him down from his pole and surely Fiyero saw that Dorothy had Nessa's shoes and must have realized she was the one trapped in the house that killed her. Fiyero isn't a monster, he'd be wanting to protect the girl and make sure she's not eaten alive by the Wizard -- and she does say in the movie that she's got a witch mad at her, so if a similar scene occurred in the canon of Wicked then Fiyero stuck with Dorothy as a way of finding Elphaba again.

The Scarecrow also tells Liir that he knew Dorothy was not from this world and had to leave. Later on, after the Wizard leaves Oz, the Scarecrow is propped up as the Throne Minister after the brief 6-month installment of Glinda the Good.

Alongside this central story, the film explores several other Wizard of Oz backstories, including the beloved characters like the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion, who help Dorothy defeat the witch in the original story The Wizard of Oz by author L.

Scarecrow's Identity In Wicked & Origin Before Wizard Of Oz Explained
November 3, 2024 - Fiyero/the Scarecrow's arc in Wicked is very confusing where the events of The Wizard of Oz are concerned. At least with the Tin Man's Wicked origin story, it's plausible that Boq (Ethan Slater) does want a heart after allegedly being done wrong by Elphaba. However, Fiyero's motivations for accompanying Dorothy as depicted in The Wizard of Oz are supposedly more complicated.

r/wicked on Reddit: Why would Fiyero help Dorothy defeat the Wicked Witch as the Scarecrow?
October 30, 2021 -

One thing I (33M) noticed about Wicked... why would Fiyero help Dorothy defeat Elphaba? If this plot runs in conjunction with the events of the 'Wizard of Oz,' the scarecrow plays a large role in trying to destroy the witch, and the witch even sets him on fire.

The only thing I can think of is that when Elphaba cast the spell to remove the Scarecrow's brain, it erased Fiyero's memory of her, and when he got his brain from the Wizard, it then made him remember.

Am I overthinking this? Please let me know.

r/wicked on Reddit: Someone explain the Dorothy/Scarecrow timeline to me
May 22, 2025 -

This has probably been covered before, forgive me I only just saw Wicked last night (loved it.)

All of the WoZ tie-ins were cute and got good laughs from everyone and I can buy all of them except for Fiyero the Scarecrow.

A.) Nessarose is used as bait by dropping Dorothy’s house on her.

B.) We the audience, watch Glinda send Dorothy on her way down the road (to meet the scarecrow)

C.) Elphaba confronts Glinda, Fiyero fights for and frees Elphaba, Fiyero is captured and turned into the scarecrow.

Either

1.) The soldiers have to carry Fiyero PASSED Dorothy on the road and post him up for her to find.

2.) The yellow brick road takes a long looping giant hairpin turn immediately before doubling back near the Munchkin village where the soldiers post him up.

Is there a better explanation other than just shrugging our collective shoulders?

r/wickedmovie on Reddit: SPOILER - Dorothy as a character in Wicked For Good
1 month ago -

I'm a fan of the musical and have just watched WFG - and taking account into the mixed reviews, I think Dorothy should have been essential and this movie should have been Wizard of Oz remake, with the Wicked characterisations.

!By sidestepping Dorothy, we sidestepped-

  1. Fiyero's whole deal as the Scarecrow - why he was willing to go with Dorothy's group (did he iose memories or was a double agent) and when did he manage to cook up the escape plan with Elphaba.

  2. While the Wicked production team says that this should not be Dorothy's story, Dorothy could represent an outsider POV on the propoganda against Elphaba - someone who has no context and initially buys into the propoganda , but through direct interactions with Elphaba can choose to accept or reject the propoganda. She could come to see Elphaba as someone more nuanced than wicked, but accidentally throws the water on her anyway which triggers the escape plan. Dorothy can and should support Elphaba's story.

  3. The most important of all - Elphaba's motivation in being wicked, as fueled by her grief. By removing an alternate version of Elphaba, Glinda and Dorothy's first meeting on the Yellow Brick Road, we missed an opportunity to further develop Elphaba's character re: her grief over Nessa, her motivation in retrieving the shoes from Dorothy. I also think a 'what have I done' moment in an Elphaba x Dorothy scene where Elphaba realizes she has let her rage got the better of her and harmed a child would have been useful to flesh out her decision to leave Oz for good, and to have Glinda continue the good work - because she believes by staying she can only be nothing but wicked. As it is, we don't see any wicked moments from Elphaba after No Good Deed, making things very rushed, and audiences questioning why Elphaba just seemingly gave up to be with a man.

The decisions Jon Chu made with not including Dorothy is a safe one but not the best one storytelling wise. And I know as musical fans we have answers to the plot holes and questions raised by the general audience - if we have so many audiences wondering about these plot holes I don't think the movie did its job in making this adaptation stand on its own.
